Waymo Vehicle in Autonomous Mode Crashes in Chandler

According to local news station ABC 15, a Honda sedan crashed into the Waymo minivan after swerving to avoid hitting another vehicle. It seems like the tech giants are struggling with the safe testing of the self-driving vehicles.

The video released by Waymo is taken from front-facing camera sensors mounted in the vehicle. That Waymo employee suffered minor injuries due to the impact, but that reportedly is the extent of injuries today. It was likewise confirmed that the vehicle was set to its autonomous mode when the accident occurred. Chandler police said the van was operating in autonomous mode.

According to eyewitness reports, the autonomous vehicle was on the westbound lane while the sedan was on the eastbound side.

For now, it seems like the autonomous vehicle was not directly responsible for the crash. The sedan's front crumple zone is wrecked and glass is broken; the van is in better shape, though its front right tire is crushed in. "This incident is still under investigation", the statement was given by the local police to the Techcrunch.
