An arbitrator's decision is due no later than May 16.

Ingram's agents suggested that they may explore further options once they review the arbitrator's full opinion.

The NFL's drug policies include a therapeutic use exemption.

In the earlier statement, Jones said the substance for which Ingram failed the drug test is "permissible with the proper use exemption", noting it was neither performance enhancing nor illegal. After winning a national college title with Alabama in the 2009 season and taking the Heisman Triophy as the top USA college player, Ingram was taken in the first round of the 2011 NFL Draft.

Ingram ranks second in Saints' history to Deuce McAllister in career rushing yards and rushing touchdowns.

With Ingram missing, the Saints will use back up running back Trey Edmunds, who had an impressive 41 yard touchdown run in Buffalo previous year, newly acquired Jonathan Williams and possibly 2018 sixth-round draft pick Boston Scott from LA Tech.

Ingram led New Orleans with 230 carries for 1,124 yards and 12 touchdowns last season while adding 58 catches for 416 yards. He needs 735 rushing yards and six TDs to become the franchise's all-time leader.
