Rafael Nadal counts to 50, breaking another Open era record — ATP Madrid

World No.1 Tennis player Rafael Nadal registered his 20 consecutive win on clay court as he defeated Gael Monfils of France by 6-3, 6-1 on Wednesday at the Madrid Open.

Unseeded Bertens, who reached the French Open semis two years ago, recovered from losing the first set to win 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 and set up a semi-final with Caroline Garcia who eased past local hopeful Carla Suarez Navarro.

This was Nadal's 14th win in a row on clay this season and he has broken another huge Open era record, winning his 50th consecutive set on clay to pass John McEnroe who claimed 49 on the carpet back in 1984, in one of the greatest Open era seasons.

In another men's singles clash, Canadian tennis star Milos Raonic will take on Israel's Denis Shapovalov for a last-eight berth, while fifth-seed Dominic Thiem of Austria will lock horns with Croatia's Borna Coric.

"When my career is over, these are things that are going to be there for always". But I've done it. Let's not talk about that any more and let's continue on what we have ahead, " he said.

Nadal has now won 21 consecutive matches on the red dirt after another stunning exhibition in his homeland, Schwartzman putting up a strong fight but failing to deny the Spaniard another entry into the record books.

Russian former world No.1 Sharapova has shown only flashes of the play that has earned her five grand slam titles since returning from a doping ban a year ago.

Paul Ryan reinstates pro-gay Jesuit House chaplain who challenged ouster
In his letter from this week, Conroy noted the apparent lack of consultation with other House members before his attempted ouster. In an appearance in Milwaukee last week, Ryan said: "This was not about politics or prayers, it was about pastoral services".

Nadal said he was unaware of the record. Rafael Nadal won 2-0.

The women's defending champions and top seed, Simona Halep brushed past qualifier Krystina Pliskova 6-1, 6-4 in just 75 minutes, but the second seed Caroline Wozniacki surprisingly lost 6-2, 6-2 to Kiki Bertens, who is now ranked 21st in the world.

He will now face South Africa's Kevin Anderson, who overcame Philipp Kohlschreiber.

"I missed in some important moments, that's why it went her way but I'm not very disappointed about this match".

Halep said: "Today she didn't miss".

Nadal must have forgotten what it feels like to go to the distance, though, and a double fault from Schwartzman put the Mallorca native back in front and he was jumping for joy after serving out the match to make history.

Kiki Bertens came from behind to beat Sharapova 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.
