Pompeo: US to help North Korea economy if it gives up nukes

If North Korea agrees to denuclearize following the Trump-Kim summit, and Pyongyang accedes to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, or lands a similar deal bilaterally with the United States, the United Nations' International Atomic Energy Agency will be the first to investigate the country, South Korean newspaper Munhwa Ilbo reported Friday.

The comments came three days after the USA president announced he would violate the worldwide nuclear deal with Iran which imposed strict curbs on Tehran's nuclear programme in return for sanctions relief.

Here is a look back at the 18-month diplomatic roller-coaster that took Trump and Kim from rhetorical warfare to the verge of the first summit between a sitting United States president and a North Korean leader, set for June 12 in Singapore.

On Thursday, Trump praised Kim for releasing three Korean Americans held as prisoners.

North Korea's development of nuclear weapons and missiles capable of reaching the United States brought exchanges of bellicose rhetoric between Mr Trump and Mr Kim past year that raised fears of a new war on the Korean peninsula.

"We are interested in how much of our culture North Korean people know about", Do Jong-hwan, South Korea's minister of culture, sports and tourism, told ABC News, hinting that plans for plenty of cultural exchanges may already be in the works.

Trump greeted the Americans when they landed early Thursday morning at Joint Base Andrews just outside Washington, D.C.

With the meeting between Kim and Trump on the horizon, she said she hopes the struggles of North Koreans are not buried amid perceived progress towards denuclearization and peace.

Alberta Emergency Alert system tested, but not everyone gets the message
Here are the times for tests scheduled for today. "If you are driving, pull over, be safe and be prepared", the minister said. The public alert system was tested in Ontario and Quebec on Monday and experienced what were described as "serious glitches".

State Department officials have taken great pains to keep three former North Korean detainees sequestered as they are flown back to the mainland United States.

Trump announced on May 10 that he would meet with Kim Jong-un in Singapore on June 12.

As the Trump-Kim summit nears, there are several concerns. "I am confident we have a shared understanding of the outcome that the leaders want", Pompeo said, "certainly President Trump and Chairman Kim and I think President Moon as well".

Japan says North Korea abducted at least 17 Japanese citizens in the 1970s and 1980s to train agents in Japanese culture and language to spy on South Korea.

"We're not talking about sanctions relief at this point", Kang said. Last June, American student Otto Warmbier was sentenced to hard labor after he was caught taking a propaganda poster during a North Korean tourism trip. The White House said the men are in good health and undergoing medical evaluations at Walter Reed Hospital.

The fact that three US citizens who had been held in North Korea were released and returned home with Pompeo also seems to have been a key factor for a U.S.

The last American to be freed - Otto Warmbier, who was jailed for stealing a hotel sign - was released a year ago but was fatally ill, and died shortly after returning home.

Abe says he is determined to pursue efforts to bring them home and seek support from the U.S., South Korea and China.
