The WHO estimates that eating trans fats - commonly found in baked and processed foods - leads to the deaths of more than 500,000 people from heart disease every year. But healthier alternatives can be used that would not affect taste or cost of food,"WHO Director-General, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said in a statement dated May 14". He also appended that there are also some Latin American countries where trans fat amount is high but they are already putting a lid on it.

Branca said that there are some countries where the risk is at the zenith like South Asian countries.

Industrially-produced trans fats are made through the process of adding hydrogen molecules to liquid fats to convert them into solid fats to become partially hydrogenated oils.

Health experts said they can be replaced with canola oil or other products.

"It is important to remember that, even with the actions by FDA and announcement by World Health Organization, there will always be naturally occurring trans fat in the diets that include meat and dairy products such as milk, butter and yogurt", the Grocery Manufacturer Association said.

The WHO recommends that no more than 1 percent of a person's calories come from trans fats. But healthier alternatives that will not affect taste or cost of food can be used, the World Health Organization said.

WHO Global Ambassador for Noncommunicable Diseases, Michael R. Bloomberg said, "Banning trans-fats in New York City helped reduce the number of heart attacks and eliminating their use around the world can save millions of lives".

"Trans fat is an unnecessary toxic chemical that kills, and there's no reason people around the world should continue to be exposed" to it, Dr. Tom Frieden, the former director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention told the Los Angeles Times.

Combining digital coupons with physical store shopping gives Amazon-Whole Foods a big advantage over other market players. Being an Amazon Prime member will bring even more savings this summer as the company adds perks for Whole Foods shoppers.

'The world is now setting its sights on today's leading killers - particularly heart disease, which kills more people than any other cause in nearly every country, ' said Dr Frieden, president of a New-York-based project called Resolve to Save Lives.

In the US, the first trans fatty food to hit the market was Crisco shortening, which went on sale in 1911.

Those fats are often found in common fried foods, fast food and snacks, and sometimes in desserts as well, according to the WHO. Diets high in trans fat increase heart disease risk by 21 per cent and deaths by 28 per cent.

WHO now wants it eliminated with a view to protecting health and saving lives.

Food manufacturers supplying USA consumers are expected to have changed their production processes to reduce trans fat use to negligible levels by next month.

In 2015, the FDA determined that trans fats are not generally recognized as safe.

Thailand is set to do by June 2018.

Create awareness: educate policymakers, producers, suppliers and the general public about the health implications of trans fatty acids.
