European Union - Italy's Conte fights to form team as ally threatens new vote

President Sergio Mattarella on Sunday vetoed the two anti-establishment parties' eurosceptic pick for the economy minister, shattering their attempt to form a coalition government, prompting 5-Star to call for the head of state's impeachment.

Shortly afterwards, the president's office summoned Mr Cottarelli, the IMF's former director of fiscal affairs, for a meeting on Monday.

Mr Conte, took his list of his preferred cabinet candidates to the president but Mr Mattarella is believed to have vetoed his choice for economy minister, Paolo Savona - a vocal eurosceptic.

Mainstream centre-left and centre-right parties were seen losing further ground in the face of voter anger over the sluggish economy, high unemployment and rising poverty.

"Mattarella has made it clear that he will not allow any policy that could put Italy on a slippery slope towards a major confrontation with the European Union that could potentially jeopardise Italy's euro membership", said Holger Schmieding, an analyst with Berenberg.

"Why don't we just say that in this country it's pointless that we vote, as the ratings agencies, financial lobbies decide the governments", a livid Di Maio said in a video on Facebook.

"Now I am telling Mattarella that we want a date for new elections".

The choice of Cottarelli, right, who met with Mattarella in Rome, could calm the markets, which had been spooked by the prospect of a Five Star-League coalition.

League leader Matteo Salvini said that Cottarella was a "Mister Nobody" who "represents financial institutions", while the head of Five Star Luigi Di Maio laughed off his chances of ever gaining the endorsement of a parliament in which his and Salvini's parties command a majority.

But the bid floundered on Sunday evening with the president's veto.

"In a democracy, if we are still in democracy, there's only one thing to do, let the Italians have their say", Salvini said in a fiery speech to supporters in central Italy.

The League's chief Matteo Salvini also criticised the president's decision, calling for mass protests and accusing Brussels and Germany of meddling. Although mainly ceremonial, the president does have the power to appoint heads of government and dissolve parliament.

Amidst the outrage, the leader of the largely collapsed Democratic Party (PD), Maurizio Martina, voiced his support for Mattarella, saying that his party-widely understood to represent the establishment-was ready "to mobilize a defense of democracy and our institutions" if attacks on the Italian president persist.

"The designation of the finance minister always sends an immediate message, of confidence or of alarm, for economic and financial operators", he added.

After winning elections in 1994, the media magnate, who was already in the crosshairs of the Italian justice system, proposed to president Oscar Luigi Scalfaro to nominate his personal lawyer Cesare Previti as Minister of Justice.

The national news service ANSA released an article announcing that "impeachment" had found its way back into the Italian vocabulary as a result of Mattarella's unprecedented move.

Berlusconi denounced what he said was a state coup and demanded early elections - but in vain.
