Solo Launches to $148 Million Worldwide

As fun as being a Star Wars fan is, there's a lot of stuff you have to put up with to fully enjoy the films.

Solo: A Star Wars Story stars Alden Ehrenreich, Emilia Clarke, Donald Glover, Woody Harrelson, Paul Bettany, Thandie Newton, Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Jon Favreau.

"A Star Wars Story" came in well below expectations with an US$83.3 million opening weekend at the North American box office.

As it turns out, an intended franchise with the title Solo may have to be just that-a solo, one-and-done affair. Force Awakens, Rogue One and The Last Jedi all opened in mid-December and had no direct competition. Each did blockbuster business and were the biggest films of their respective years (2015, 2016 and 2017). Three-day opening estimates are now sitting at $82 million, well below the $108.4 million "Revenge of the Sith" made in its first weekend. "Deadpool 2" is expected to make $54 million over the four-day weekend, giving it an estimated domestic total after Monday of $218 million.

"There's a question of frequency, and how many times people will go to the movies".

But the film, with a cast including Donald Glover, Woody Harrelson and Emilia Clarke, was falling short not only in North America, box office tracker Exhibitor Relations predicted, but also overseas.

"Let's measure how we feel about this until more time passes", Hollis said. Even tired franchises like Pirates of the Caribbean and Transformers that bombed domestically a year ago made up for low turnout at home with big numbers overseas.

Ireland set to end abortion ban as exit polls signal landslide vote
The government has proposed to allow abortion in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy with later terminations allowed in some cases. Campaigning was not allowed Friday, but Dublin was still filled with signs and banners urging citizens to vote "yes" or "no".

Star Wars is generally awesome and the films are usually strong in terms of quality. And personally, I found it to be an unexpectedly pleasant film, more reminiscent of World War II era crime capers than the typical mythic bombast that has come to be associated with Star Wars ever since the prequels.

"It's the compressed timeframe between the two "Star Wars" films and the highly competitive nature of this marketplace".

Lucasfilm has a chance to not only gain back the confidence of the naysayers, but can set the stage for a triumphant run to Episode IX.

"For me, as fun as that Chewie entrance is, I think seeing Han and Chewie with Jabba [the Hutt] could have equal amounts of fun", says Jonathan. The movie falls in the same spot for Metacritic scores, though Rogue One places just slightly above Solo there.

And not to spoil anything for readers who have yet to see the film, but you can see the love Howard brought to the film and yes, some of that old Star Wars magic is definitely present.

But there were also questions beyond the effect the calendar had on "Solo".
