Starbucks to Close Stores Tuesday to Conduct Anti-Bias Training

Starbucks will close more than 8,000 stores nationwide on Tuesday to conduct anti-bias training, the next of many steps the company is taking to try to restore its tarnished image as a hangout where all are welcome.

Last month, two men-Donte Robinson and Rashon Nelson-sat down in a Philadelphia Starbucks. The Seattle-based chain will shutter its company-owned locations and corporate offices within the United States to train its almost 175,000 employees. Starbucks locations in the Jacksonville area will close starting at 2:30 p.m.

Most of the company's 7,000 licensed stores, such as those operated by major grocery stores, hotels, universities and airports, are expected to remain open.

On Tuesday afternoon, May 29, workers at each location will break into small groups to learn together.

Protesters gather outside a Starbucks in Philadelphia, April 15, 2018, where two black men were arrested Thursday after Starbucks employees called police to say the men were trespassing.

Eric Varner of Grove City says he once worked for Starbucks adding that the company has always been very focused on promoting an open and inclusive culture.

Earlier this week, Trump said that he was calling the much-anticipated meeting off, citing "tremendous anger and open hostility". Trump's letter caught allies by surprise. "You will not pass this class if you don't show some improvement very soon", he wrote.

This will mark only the second time that Starbucks has closed all locations for training efforts. Ifill and her fellow unpaid adviser, Heather McGhee, the president of the public policy organization Demos, will issue a report outlining a comprehensive set of issues they believe the company must address. The NAACP's Sherrilyn Ifill, who is one of Starbucks's advisors on its anti-bias training material, has previously noted that "this can't be a one-off".

"For several hours this afternoon, we will close stores and offices to discuss how to make Starbucks a place where all people feel welcome".

Starbucks recently changed its policy to allow people who haven't made a purchase to spend time in stores or use the bathroom. The coffee chain is asking customers to behave in a way that "maintains a warm and welcoming environment". Roughly 175,000 Starbucks employees will participate.

A guide advises staff to consider whether the actions they take would apply to any customer in the same situation. It also suggests that they consult colleagues to see if they agree the person is being disruptive.

The entire session will last four hours, the Associated Press reported. If so, employees are instructed to approach the customer and respectfully ask him or her to cease the offensive action while another employee watches.
