The Golden State Warriors secured a dramatic overtime victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers in Game 1 of the NBA Finals after a wild finish that saw them receive a huge slice of luck.

LeBron James, as he's done all playoffs long, carried the Cavs.

Cleveland coach Tyronn Lue believes Smith thought the Cavs were ahead; Smith contended he knew the score, but figured someone would call a timeout.

The Cavs lost 17-10 in overtime falling to a 124-114 defeat in game one of the best-of-seven National Basketball Association finals. And then tonight in the finals on the biggest stage, when our team played well, played our ass off, man, it ain't right.

The play came with about 30 seconds left and the Cavaliers leading 104-102 after James converted a three-point play as part of a 51-point night.

Referee Ken Mauer said of the call reversal, "The reason for the trigger is that we had doubt as to whether or not James was in the restricted area".

Of course, Game 1 was a classic, perhaps throwing salt on the theory people are bored with these two teams playing each other. On the next possession, James stepped up to take a charge from Kevin Durant, forcing an apparent turnover, but after a replay review, crew chief Ken Mauer overturned the call and awarded Durant two foul shots. Hill hit his first shot to tie the game at 107-107, but missed his second shot.

LeBron James put on one of the best displays we've ever seen on Thursday night, scoring 51 points with eight rebounds and eight assists.

The game almost over, James jawed with both Curry and Klay Thompson, then Tristan Thompson and Draymond Green tangled moments later and made contact.

He drove past Curry for a three-point play with 50 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter. "I was trying to get enough to bring it out to get a shot off", Smith said.

"I don't know what J.R. was thinking", James said, refusing to speculate on Smith's thought process.

In a physical and at times contentious start to the Finals, Stephen Curry led the way for the Warriors with 29 points, nine assists and six rebounds.

James got the first-half help he needed, not only from Love (12 points and eight rebounds in the first half), but also Smith (seven points plus four rebounds) and Larry Nance Jr.
