Is Microsoft acquiring GitHub?

San Francisco-based GitHub hosts more than 28 million software developers who are working on 80 million code repositories.

Favoured by independent and tech giant software developers alike, the two companies will accelerate enterprise use of Github and hope to bring Microsoft's own developer tools and services to new audiences.

We are committed to being stewards of the GitHub community, which will retain its developer-first ethos, operate independently and remain an open platform. Google moved most of its projects to GitHub after Google Code shut down, and countless open-source Android applications and libraries live on the site as well. There's no official confirmation yet or how much Microsoft is paying, but the last time GitHub raised new funding back in 2015, the company was valued at roughly $2 billion.

"Most importantly, we recognize the responsibility we take on with this agreement", Nadella wrote. A lot has changed since then, and under CEO Satya Nadella, Microsoft is supporting many flavours of Linux and has used open-source models on some significant cloud and developer products itself. Last August, the company said it wanted a replacement for CEO Chris Wanstrath - one of GitHub's founders. David Heinemeier Hansson, creator of the Ruby on Rails framework, joined people that were forlorn about the deal, and tweeted that this would be a "sad end to the independence of GitHub".

He appealed to developers' sense of trust in GitHub, saying Microsoft will work to make the company even better by using the resources at its disposal. Microsoft corporate vice president and founder of Xamarin, Nat Friedman, will become the new GitHub CEO.

The five-time Ballon d'Or victor added: "In a World Cup, logic is nearly never given". They are part of Group D, which also includes Croatia , Iceland and Nigeria.

Now, although the rumoured acquisition is yet to be confirmed by either party, fellow web-based version control hosting service provider Gitlab appears to be ramping up its efforts to lure Github users who might not be entirely happy with Microsoft's reported acquisition of the company. "We have been on a journey with open source, and today we are active in the open source ecosystem, we contribute to open source projects, and some of our most vibrant developer tools and frameworks are open source", Nadella said.

That said, GitHub is more significant than Microsoft, and its unlikely its goal will be modified once the Redmond-based giant takes over day-to-day operations.

Shares of Microsoft are up 19% since the beginning of 2018.

Microsoft has talked to GitHub on and off for a few years.
