Microsoft has reportedly acquired the San Francisco-based hosting service and might announce the deal as soon as Monday, a Bloomberg report said, according to "people familiar with the matter".

"[.] the real power comes when every developer can create together, collaborate, share code and build on each other's work". Microsoft is the top contributor to the site, and has more than 1,000 employees actively pushing code to repositories on GitHub according to The Verge.

Business Insiders reports that GitHub was exploring the option of a potential IPO six months ago, but the company is said to be "impressed" by Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, who has embraced open-source initiatives during his four years as head of the company.

GitHub is described as the world's leading software development platform, and it now served over 28 million developers worldwide. Those projects have typically used open-source software development techniques while keeping some code proprietary. Some people are reporting that the deal was worth $2 billion Dollars, although they might have misread the Bloomberg post, which was talking about a $2 billion USD valuation during a round of private investments back in 2015. "By integrating GitHub and Microsoft, they extend their open source leadership, and I hope they continue the momentum GitHub's had so far".

Nat Friedman, the Microsoft vice president who will soon be the CEO of GitHub.

Microsoft said the GitHub acquisition is expected to have a negative impact on 2019 earnings but positive beginning in 2020.

If you aren't a developer, then the name GitHub may not mean much to you, but for developers it's a big deal. While some are happy to see GitHub getting the backing of Microsoft, others are rather concerned, and there have been reports of a sudden shift of projects to GitHub alternative GitLab. Microsoft expects that the whole GitHub team will stick around for the transition as well.

"So as we look to the next decade of software development and beyond, we know it's all about the developer". Founded in 2008, GitHub hosts 27 million software developers working on 80 million repositories of code.

Microsoft shares rose almost 1 percent to hit a record high of $101.79.
