Holding hopes of a "blue wave" in November, US Democrats on Tuesday fought to shape the political battlefield in primaries across eight states, none more important than California, where US Republicans avoided an embarrassing setback in the race for governor.

Republicans did manage to get John Cox into the top-two runoff for California governor and said they were excited about candidates who won their primaries in key Senate races.

In California, where voters vote for senate candidates regardless of political party, the Democrats have secured the top two positions on the roster, all but securing its claim on the senate seat.

John Cox, a Republican businessman backed by President Donald Trump, commanded 26 percent of the election night vote tally - to Newsom's 33 percent.

"Gavin Newsom is not going to know what hit him", Cox said in an interview Wednesday, "because he thinks everything is hunky-dory hanging out with his Marin County pals". "We'll have a good debate about which way this state should go". Party Republicans strongly support the tax law that Mr. Trump signed a year ago, though it is more of a drag than a lift among voters overall, the new Journal/NBC News poll shows.

"A lot of them are running in pretty competitive primaries but in districts that are ultimately not going to be that competitive in the general election", said Jennifer Lawless, the director of the Women & Politics Institute at American University in Washington, D.C.

California voters are rejecting the Democratic mantra of tax hikes, protecting sanctuary cities, and the hyper-partisan and baseless impeachment witch hunt.

In New Mexico, Representative Michelle Lujan Grisham won the Democratic Party's nomination in the race to succeed outgoing New Mexico Governor Susana Martinez, a Republican.

Ivey, who stepped into the governor post after the resignation of Robert Bentley a year ago, will seek a full term in November. The Democrats controlled both chambers for the first two years of Obama's presidency, but Republicans won the majority in the House in the 2010 midterm elections.

If you look at the cumulative GOP percentage of the vote in California's seven battleground districts, Republicans held their own.

Proponents in California said it would encourage more independent voters to participate in primaries and it would lead to more moderates winning elections, because candidates would not have to woo their liberal or conservative party extremes to win primaries.

The US is Mexico's largest trading partner, receiving about 80 per cent of the country's exports. The result has been a boon for Texas and the United States, as well as Mexico and Canada.

Only 5% of Party Republicans say immigration is the issue that will most decide their vote this November, compared with 22% of "Trump Republicans"-those who say they support Mr. Trump more than the party itself". If the Democrats are going to take back the House, which now appears unlikely, it will be in swing states like New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Texas and NY.

Trump's election inspired record numbers of women to run for federal and statewide office, most of whom are running as Democrats.

In 2016 Roby was the first Republican member of Congress to withdraw her endorsement of Trump, then the Republican presidential nominee after he was caught on video bragging about grabbing women's genitals.

"It's hard to say, because California is a Democratic state", she said, before adding, "But we can try".

The other two measures give tax breaks to homeowners who install rain capture devices and delay the effective start date for ballot measures by about six weeks. The jury deadlocked, but Republicans hope to use Menendez's legal troubles to tar other Democrats like Sherrill across the state.

Democrats also put forward candidates in New Jersey that they believe will have a good chance of picking up a couple of Republican-held seats left open by retirements, and put up strong challenges against Republican Reps. Even though Republican Diane Harkey was the top finisher, the next three finishers on the list are all Democrats, with Mike Levin finishing in second.

Republican Rep. Mimi Walters easily advanced to the November election in her Orange County district that has been targeted by Democrats.

Many of these women credit President Donald Trump's election and the potency of the Me Too movement with fueling their desire to run.

A key Senate race took shape in the heart of Trump country as well.

Montana Republicans were picking a candidate to take on Democratic Senator Jon Tester, considered one of the most vulnerable incumbent senators in the nation.
