Plastic in the sea is such a serious threat that it is considered one of the most serious environmental emergencies in the world. They promise to make this the largest and most substantial World Environment Day ever.

Highlighting the theme, "It Takes a Nation to Beat Plastic Pollution", the minister said that "with strong support from all parties, the initiative will succeed in raising public awareness in addressing the use and disposal of plastic bottles". In accordance, this year's theme is "Beating Plastic Pollution", for which we are exploring green alternatives to reduce the usage of plastics across all our offices, dealers and service networks. By doing so, severe environmental consequences can be prevented and the natural habitat will be liberated from plastics.

The UN made a series of recommendations to make plastics bans more effective, from encouraging more cooperation from businesses to offering incentives.

"Companies and government need to focus on reductions and eliminations of single-use plastics production if they are serious about tackling this issue".

Two years ago, the Indian government notified the "Plastic Waste Management Rules" which recommended the minimum thickness of plastic carry bags be increased from 40 microns to 50 microns.

"It is high time we refrain from using disposable plastic products that are used for minutes, but persist in the environment forever", Environment Secretary Roy A. Cimatu said as the country joins the world in observing Environment Month.

But there are signs of action to limit plastic pollution, which harms life in the oceans, contaminates soils and releases toxic chemicals when burnt.

The governor urged every member of the society to jointly begin to think about the way forward out of plastic pollution by acting in consonance with the relevant agencies to create a better society. Particularly, the Head of UN Environment mentioned: "The assessment shows that action can be painless and profitable - with huge gains for people and the planet that help avert the costly downstream costs of pollution".

"Plastic isn't the problem. It's what we do with it".

Union Environment Minister Harsh Vardhan on Monday unveiled the first non-plastic bound copy of the National Geographic magazine here marking the World Environment Day.

She said all of "us have to be radical and passionate towards keeping the environment clean and safeguarding it for the future generation".
