Commenting on the G-7's statement, Putin said: "It's time to stop that chatter and deal with real issues".

Since the two presidents' conversation in March, relations between Moscow and the West have worsened, particularly after the poisoning of a former Russian spy in the United Kingdom, which prompted Western countries to expel Russian diplomats.

At the G-7 gathering in Canada on Friday, Trump suggested that Russian Federation be offered a seat at the "negotiating table" of the organization, which was previously called the G-8 before Russian Federation was ousted for annexing Crimea in 2014.

"President Putin is the leader of a great country who is influential around the world", Xi said.

The Chinese president said the three countries should push the construction of the China-Mongolia-Russia economic corridor, actively explore cooperation in areas such as infrastructure interconnectivity, and promote sub-regional cooperation in adjacent areas of the three countries.

China is mired in tough negotiations with the United States to avoid a trade war, while Moscow has deep differences with Washington on multiple diplomatic fronts, including Syria and Ukraine.

And as if to add another irritant, Trump called for Russian Federation to be brought back into G7 and resurrect the G8 format, from which the Kremlin was expelled following Moscow's annexation of Crimea in 2014 and its meddling in eastern Ukraine.

The French and Canadian leaders have each vowed to address the tariffs with Trump at the summit.

North Korea talks not a one-off: minister
President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un are due to hold their historic meeting in Singapore on Tuesday next week.

"No matter what fluctuations there are in the worldwide situation, China and Russian Federation have always firmly taken the development of relations as a priority", Xi said at the start of talks Friday with Putin, Reuters reported.

SCO states also include four ex-Soviet central Asian republics and new members Pakistan and India. He called Putin his best honest friend and most respected in China.

Speaking to AFP in Lithuania's capital Vilnius, senior Iranian official Massoumeh Ebtekar said Iran hoped European powers, Russian Federation and China would confirm their willingness to uphold the deal "as soon as possible because Iran can not wait forever".

In May, the president announced his administration would impose steel and aluminum tariffs on Canada, Mexico and the European Union - all of which announced retaliatory tariffs against the U.S.in recent days.

"We are ready for this", he said.

At the SCO summit, Moscow and Beijing again expressed their hopes for a high level of bilateral cooperation, Russian President Vladimir Putin told reporters at a follow-up press conference, emphasizing the importance of such a stance. The president added that the nuclear deal is backed by a U-N Security Council resolution and its, therefore, binding for all countries.

Xi and Putin and others pledged their support of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, the 2015 Iranian nuclear deal from which President Donald Trump withdrew the US last month.
