Sony Crushes Cross-Play Dreams For 'Fortnite'

The company went on to tout its 79 million consoles sold worldwide and said that it has a "huge community of gamers who can play together on Fortnite and all online titles". Naturally, this left many fans upset and disappointed, as this meant that they would be unable to access various skins and emotes they had collected (or bought) since playing.

It's fine though, because Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo are celebrating by giving devoted gamers basically every single deal they've ever wanted, plus release dates and preorders for games we've literally been waiting years for. Neither the Fortnite website nor Epic Customer Service are able to change this.

After the Smash Ultimate Direct aired, a lot of folks had already gotten over the hype and were accusing Nintendo of porting the Wii U edition, adding a few characters and stages, and calling it a day.

It's especially unusual, seeing as much of Fortnite's success can be owed to the game being made available on PlayStation 4 in the first place.

Epic Games has also allowed for a collection of "cross-play" options between platforms, with Xbox players being able to team up with those on PC and a variety of other examples, however, users on PlayStation have only been able to play with or against those on PC. Whichever way you slice it, Sony's stance on this is, rightly or wrongly, landing it in hot water, and the above statement will nearly certainly add fuel to the fire rather than extinguish it. (Insert obligatory-yet-dated "Lost" reference here.) Previously using an Epic account for any of the company's games, like the now-defunct Paragon, will apparently prevent you from signing in to the same account on a different platform.

Ovechkin is unlikely to let that bother him, the Muscovite was quoted as saying in his post-game interview: "Fans, we did it. Jakub Vrana opened the scoring in the second period with a shorthanded goal on Marc Andre Fleury to make it 1-0 Capitals .

It seems that Sony's shares have dropped significantly after the backlash from Fortnite fans who took to the internet to air their grievances over the locked Epic Games accounts they're now left with.

The release of Fortnite on Nintendo Switch was inevitable but still a very welcome bit of E3 news - especially with the whole "it's out now" angle.

Trying to log into the Switch edition of Fortnite with an account tied to the PS4 produces an error.

Fans on social media have been vocal about Sony's limitations, and even Xbox has had some fun at its expense. Perhaps the Sony rep who crafted the above statement should consider a second career in politics.
