German authorities arrest Audi CEO Rupert Stadler in ‘dieselgate’ investigation

In May, a federal grand jury in Detroit indicted Winterkorn on charges stemming from the diesel emissions cheating scandal in a plot that prosecutors allege reached the top of the world's largest automaker.

Stadler's arrest was confirmed by a spokesperson of the greater Volkswagen Group, adding that the presumption of innocence applied to his case.

The Munich prosecutors said Stadler's arrest was not made at the behest of USA authorities.

The move follows a search last week of Stadler's private residence, ordered by Munich prosecutors investigating the manager on suspicion of fraud and indirect improprieties with documents.

News of the arrest comes as Volkswagen's (VW) new group CEO Herbert Diess is trying to introduce a new leadership structure, which includes Stadler, to speed up a shift toward electric vehicles in the wake of its "dieselgate" troubles.

"We confirm that Mr. Stadler was arrested this morning".

The Munich prosecutor's office is reportedly working towards the investigation of 19 other suspects, identities of whom haven't been disclosed, yet. "The hearing to determine whether he will be remanded is ongoing".

The emissions scandal first emerged in 2015.

In the Reuters report, Stadler had his contract extended in 2017 and was named as a suspect alongside another unnamed member of Audi's board of management.

Stadler's arrest is the most high-profile yet in the diesel gate crisis, which started when the Volkswagen group admitted in 2015 to equipping some 11 million diesels worldwide with "defeat devices" created to dupe pollution tests.

Most of its problems have been in the United States, where a total of nine people have been charged and two former VW executives have pleaded guilty and been sentenced to prison terms.

The scandal has so far cost the VW group more than 25 billion euros ($29 billion) in buybacks, fines and compensation, and the company remains mired in legal woes at home and overseas.
