The Trump administration plans to announce its withdrawal from the United Nations Human Rights Council on Tuesday, making good on a pledge to leave a body it has long accused of hypocrisy and criticized as biased against Israel, according to two people familiar with the matter.

In a speech to the council past year, [current U.N. Ambassador Nikki] Haley called out the body for what she said was its "relentless, pathological campaign" against Israel.

The U.N. Human Rights Council was established in 2006 as a successor to the Human Rights Commission, which was criticized for politicized abuse and the unrepentantly oppressive practices of many member states, exactly as the Trump administration is criticizing the Human Rights Council today. The policy decision by the Trump administration has been condemned in recent weeks, with a fever pitch being reached earlier this week as photos, videos, and audio of the detention centers have been shared with the public.

"The UN Human Rights Council has played an important role in such countries as North Korea, Syria, Myanmar and South Sudan, but all Trump seems to care about is defending Israel", said Human Rights Watch executive director Ken Roth.

Either way, the USA pullout was bound to have ripple effects for at least two countries at the council: China and Israel.

"Should it become reformed we would be happy to rejoin".

All concerns regarding human rights abuses in all the other countries around the world are debated under Agenda Item 4. She said that after repeated warnings by the Trump administration, "Regrettably, it is now clear that our call for reform was not heeded". "In short, the Commission had lost the world's trust". It was only in 2009 that the US joined the organization under President Barack Obama, whose administration argued that USA membership could better steer it.

Judge orders ex-Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort to jail
The blunt remarks came the same day that Manafort was ordered to jail amid allegations of witness tampering. Kilimnik, whom Mueller's office says has ties to Russian intelligence, could not be reached for comment.

In a speech from Geneva, Haley also insisted that it was "essential the council address its chronic anti-Israel bias if it's to have any credibility".

The U.S. withdrawal from the council isn't exactly a surprise.

A full pullout by the U.S. leaves the council without one of its traditional defenders of human rights. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu welcomed the USA decision.

A pullout could be largely symbolic: The United States' current term on the council ends next year, when it could revert to the observer status held by other countries that are not members.

When the Council was created in 2006, U.S. President George W. Bush's administration shunned the body. The body has a permanent standing agenda item on suspected violations committed by Israel in the occupied Palestinian territories that Washington wants removed.

In May, the council voted to send a team of worldwide investigators to probe the deadly shootings of Gaza protesters by Israeli forces. The US and Australia cast the only "no" votes.
