White House: Trump Supports Both House Immigration Bills

Ryan brokered an agreement among House Republicans to vote next week on two immigration bills - a hard-line conservative measure and an alternative that Ryan and other GOP leaders have been negotiating with the many GOP factions in the House.

Trump was asked on "Fox and Friends" about the bills on Friday morning.

To prevent these moderates from forcing a vote and embarrassing House Republicans by passing a liberal immigration bill without voting on a conservative one, Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wisc., announced this week that both bills would come up for a vote next week.

Republicans attempted to craft the bill in line with President Trump's immigration "pillars" issued by the White House earlier this year - including border wall funding, the elimination of the visa lottery, a pathway to citizenship for Dreamers and changes to family sponsorship - and planned to hold a vote on the bill along with a more conservative proposal from Rep. "I have to have that".

House Freedom Caucus Chairman Mark Meadows, R-N.C., told reporters Friday that he believes Trump has an accurate understanding of what is in the draft compromise and is simply pushing for the most conservative bill and not for ending the talks.

Republicans could choose to reignite their petition to pass bills with the help of Democrats, and California Republican Rep. Jeff Denham, another one of the members leading negotiations, said "everything is on the table" when asked if he would start whipping up support for the petition again.

But two Republicans on Sunday said they knew of two cases in which a parent who attempted to show up at an official entry point - just as the administration recommends - and still had their children separated. The moderates used a parliamentary move called a discharge petition in an attempt to force House action, but they fell two signatures short of what they needed to succeed. "He would sign either the Goodlatte or the leadership bills".

The House intends to vote on both bill next week, as of Saturday, Kaplan reports. "We are enforcing the laws passed by Congress", she said, calling on Congress to reform immigration laws. And it does not end family separation at the southwest border, as various lawmakers and media outlets contend.

"House Republicans are not going to take on immigration without the support and endorsement of President Trump", McHenry said.

Nor did Churchill or FDR at their wartime summits confront their ally Stalin for his legendary crimes against humanity. You don't understand sarcasm", Trump said. "You will have nuclear war", he said.

In comments to reporters, Ryan said next week's votes were scheduled "to give members the ability to express their positions" - not necessarily to pass a bill through the House.

To address the issue, Republicans are adding provisions to both the Goodlatte bill, as well as the more moderate compromise bill, that aim to keep the families together, even if that means keeping them together while still in custody with the Department of Homeland Security.

"What I'm asking Congress to do is to give us a third option which we have been requesting past year", Trump said. Bob Goodlatte of Virginia, would write the Obama-era DACA program into law, giving it more permanence, and would include a massive burst of enforcement measures, mandatory use of E-Verify, more Border Patrol agents and making overstaying a visa a crime.

The Trump administration insists the family separations are required under the law.

The President has offered little clarity on his support for the bills, which has complicated the matter even more. Among them, family-related visas for the married children or adult siblings of US citizens as well as the 55,000 visas now available under the diversity lottery system for immigrants from other represented countries, including many in Africa. "If you don't like that, then don't smuggle children over our border", he said.

But this set of rules for minors - and the White House's objections - existed well before the new zero tolerance policy.

The result will be either nothing passes, or the fraudulent "compromise" - created to give some endangered House Republicans phony talking points in the fall - squeaks through.

Immigration hawks blasted the GOP bill as "amnesty" for lawbreakers.

Texas Sen. Ted Cruz was among the first Republicans to say he will introduce legislation that would double the number of federal immigration judges to 750, expand detention facilities with temporary shelters and expedite processing of asylum requests while mandating that families be housed together during the proceedings.
