AMC Theatres Announces MoviePass Killer: 12 Movies Per Month for $19.95

AMC theaters has announced a new proprietary ticket subscription service to rival MoviePass, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The theater chain announced a new service to its loyalty program, AMC Stubs, allowing subscribers to see up to three movies a week for a monthly fee of $19.95.

AMC Stubs A-List also lists key differences between itself and MoviePass, such as the ability to watch IMAX or 3D movies and to watch movies the subscriber has already seen. AMC Theatres CEO Adam Aron had this to say in a statement.

Dubbed the "AMC Stubs A-List", the subscription service will cost $19.95 per month and kick off on June 26.

Hornets traded Dwight Howard to the Nets
Getting that, along with a path to two max salary slots in 2019-20 in exchange for getting rid of a grumbling Timofey Mozgov? Howard, 32, played for the Hornets in the 2017-18 season, where he averaged 16.6 points and 9.3 rebounds in 81 games.

However, AMC said movie will not be able to carry over from the previous week if they fail to see three films. That represents a major inconvenience for many and that could make AMC's service worth the extra money for many moviegoers. Stubs-A-List also allows for users to purchase tickets ahead of time online or through the AMC app. MoviePass users can only purchase tickets on the day of a showing and, in most cases, they have to be at the theater before the ticket can be purchased.

That "sustainable price" bit is no doubt a dig at MoviePass. Soon after announcing the launch of Stubs A-List, IMAX announced that it would be in full cooperation with the service and that there would be no added charge to see IMAX movies through the A-List service. CNNMoney reported in May that MoviePass' parent company, Helios and Matheson Analytics, burns through approximately $21.7 million each month to keep MoviePass in operation. That is sure to be appealing for many, but the benefits with MoviePass are still clear.

MoviePass has caught wind of AMC's A-List program, which they caustically tweeted about earlier Wednesday morning. It was a smashing success when it came out a few years ago; so much so that the company had some difficulty keeping up with the number of subscribers it acquired in a short period.
