France and Denmark progress after World Cup's first scoreless draw

Denmark coach Age Hareide said his team did what needed to be done to earn the point that took them into the last 16.

After topping Group C thanks to a tiresome draw, France are on track to face Argentina in the first knockout round if Lionel Messi can inspire his side to victory against Nigeria, who occupy second spot in Group D.

They proceeded to play out a dour draw that was devoid of the attacking intent and endeavor that have characterized Russian Federation 2018 so far - bringing a record run of 36 games without a goalless draw to a sleep-inducing halt.

The victor of Group C will take on the runner-up of Group D (Nigeria's section) in the Round of 16 in Kazan on Saturday 30th June, while the victor of Group D will play the runner-up of Group C in Nizhny Novgorod on Sunday 1st July.

Much of a 78,011 crowd in Luzhniki Stadium whistled misplaced passes and slow play as the game progressed and Denmark protected its point - likely aware Australia had no chance of winning. The Danes need a positive result and hope that Australia doesn't get a win against already-eliminated Peru in the other Group C game which will take place at the same time.

Corden said it was the "most handsome story" he had ever heard, before singing a teary rendition of the song. He agreed, saying: "We expected it to last 10 years, but it keeps going on, and on, and on".

"We cannot be only focused on Christian but as I said he's got the key role in his team so we need to look after him".

A French team with six starters resting barely tested Denmark goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel until substitute Nabil Fekir tried two long-range shots. The 33-year-old made his only save in the 54th minute, spilling Christian Eriksen's free-kick before pouncing on the loose ball. The first 0-0 of the 2018 tournament, though, had been on the cards from an early stage. They are the better side and should do enough to get all three points.

"It has not ended up a very exciting match because the Danish team were satisfied with a draw as it meant they would qualify". Even the top World Cup teams will have difficulty scoring against the Danes. The duo will be looking to impress and convince Deschamps for a start in the round of sixteen contest against a side from Group D.

"They are really very good, really, really good", Hareide said of the Croats, who have beaten Argentina and Nigeria in their two group matches so far.
