SAMARA-Luis Suarez helped fire Uruguay into the last 16 of the World Cup as Group A winners on Monday after opening the scoring in their 3-0 win over host nation Russian Federation, who had a man sent off.

Uruguay then took control of the game and doubled their advantage in fortuitous fashion as Diego Laxalt's effort from distance was massively deflected by Cheryshev and squeezed into the net.

Saudi Arabia winger Salem Al-Dawsari scored a last-gasp victor as Mohamed Salah's Egypt suffered a 2-1 loss in their Group A dead rubber played in Volgograd.

Russia's goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev (L) reacts as Luis Suarez celebrates Uruguay's second goal.

Russia's hopes of launching a fightback were effectively dashed before half-time when full-back Igor Smolnikov was sent off for a second bookable offence and, although they were much improved after the restart, Edinson Cavani struck again at the death as Uruguay coasted to a 3-0 win to complete a maximum haul of nine points without conceding a single goal.

In-form Cheryshev had the chance to draw Russian Federation level nearly immediately but his half-volley from Artem Dzyuba's knockdown was too close to Galatasaray shot-stopper Fernando Muslera, who won his 100th global cap.

Uruguay was making its 12th appearance at the World Cup, which it won in 1930 and 1950. More recently, the team finished fourth in South Africa in 2010 and made the round of 16 in Brazil four years ago.

Lucas Torreira, the 22-year-old defensive midfielder for Uruguay, addressed the persistent rumors that he's headed to Arsenal.

Uruguay's central defender Jose Gimenez did not attend the training session due to an injury sustained in one of the two previous group stage matches of the world championship.

Suarez looked determined to impress after his poor opening match against Egypt, and it was his clever low free-kick that set the tone for what was a very comfortable victory. The team did not say when he might return.

As winners of Group A, Uruguay go on to face the Group B runners-up in the round-of-16, which at this time of writing could be any of three teams: Spain, Portugal and Iran.

When Russia take on Spain on Sunday, Cherchesov will find out just how useful it was.

Uruguay were all over Russian Federation in this one but the hosts going down to 10 men killed any hope of a comeback altogether.

A song by comedian Semyon Slepakov went viral just before the tournament, poking fun at Russia's poor form and suggesting players needed Chechnya's authoritarian leader, Ramzan Kadyrov, as coach for extra motivation. Alexander Golovin had been the team's creative spark in midfield, but he was rested since another yellow card for him would have meant a one-game ban.
