El Tri will now play the victor of group E which, depending on results in the two matches to be played later today, could be Brazil, Switzerland or Serbia.

With victories over defending champion Germany and South Korea, Mexico has a chance to win its group with a ideal record for the first time in its World Cup history.

Mexico defender Edson Alvarez diverted the ball into his own goal following a throw-in as Sweden ran out easy winners, with both teams qualifying for the round of 16.

Previously, Mexico topped Group F, which includes defending champions Germany, Sweden and South Korea.

Janne Andersson's side reaped the rewards of a relentless attacking display to secure top spot in Group F, with Mexico following them through as runners-up after Germany's shock 2-0 defeat to South Korea.

While celebrations were muted among the players, there can be no doubt that the relief for them - and the team's millions of supporters - was enormous.

There was more drama on the hour, as Hector Moreno brought down Berg in the box and skipper Granqvist held his nerve in front of the massed ranks of Mexicans to bury his penalty.

Brazil defender Thiago Silva, left, is congratulated on his goal by forward Neymar during their World Cup Group E match against Serbia at the Spartak Stadium in Moscow on Wednesday. "We knew that we were going to play for first place against Sweden. We have everything to gain and we are mentally strong ahead of the match", Andersson told a news conference.

Sweden were under a minute away from a historic victory against Germany in the last match, but came up just short after Tony Kroos curled home a vicious set piece in the 95th minute.

It could have been worse for Mexico, who started badly and never recovered, and Sweden were denied what looked a strong call for a penalty on 30 minutes. "We are highly motivated, we're very, very confident", he said.

But without an improvement on this performance they risk falling once again at the same stage where they have been knocked out in the last six World Cups.

At the interval, with the game also goalless in Kazan, Mexico and Germany were going through.

As Sweden's lead grew, Mexican fans paid more attention to the other game, rooting against Germany, which could have passed Mexico with a victory depending on tiebreakers.

A draw will see them make sure of a berth in the next round and cement their status as group winners.
