Google allowing 3rd-party developers to scan your Gmail

Software Developers are Scanning the Inboxes of Gmail Users

According to the report, apparently it has become "common practice" for marketing companies to scan the emails of their users, although we suppose common isn't necessarily good. Something else that's unclear is whether Gmail users are fully aware that individual employees may be reading their emails, as opposed to an automated system.

The WSJ cited a second case, that of another Gmail developer, Edison Software, that sells a mobile application for reading and organising email. The company recently rolled out new features for Gmail in a bid to make it easier for users to navigate their account and review security and privacy options.

For example, the report said, a company called Return Path Inc. collects data for marketers "by scanning the inboxes of more than two million people who have signed up for one of the free apps in Return Path's partner network using a Gmail, Microsoft Corp. or Yahoo email address". The company has read over 8,000 emails to develop its software.

The revelation comes at a bad time for Google and Gmail, the world's largest email service with 1.4 billion users.

Google says it vets all the apps that request access to Gmail accounts and only grants access with the explicit consent of users. The increased scrutiny follows the Cambridge Analytica scandal, in which a data firm was accused of misusing the personal information of more than 80 million Facebook users in an attempt to sway elections. In most cases, the people who signed up for the price-comparison deals or other programs agreed to provide access to their inboxes as part of the opt-in process.

Some Democrats with eye on 2020: 'Abolish ICE'
This week, Democratic Kirsten Gillibrand of NY became the first senator to announce support for the abolishment of ICE . ICE spokeswoman Liz Johnson condemned calls to abolish the agency as "dangerously misguided" in a statement Friday.

But you should make sure you trust the apps and developers that have such access to your accounts and that you are only giving them as much access as they need.

They were then able to read and scan private emails to target adverts.

The Journal highlights two companies that it says engages in this practice.

According to a report by the Wall Street Journal on Monday, Google allows various third-party app developers to sift through its users Gmail messages under the guise of offering users better products and services.

But everyone who spoke to the Journal confirmed that the practice is specified in their user agreements and they have implemented strict rules for employees regarding the handling of email.
