Europe's package of economic measures to offset the USA pullout from the nuclear deal does not go far enough, President Hassan Rouhani told French President Emmanuel Macron by telephone on Thursday, Iranian state news agency IRNA reported.

Iran signed a landmark nuclear deal with the United States, Britain, France, Russia, China and Germany in 2015 to halt its nuclear weapons program in exchange for sanctions relief.

Top diplomats from Iran and five world powers sat down in Vienna on Friday to hash out what steps are needed to preserve the nuclear deal with Tehran following the withdrawal of the United States.

The other signatories - Britain, France, Germany, China and Russian Federation - have vowed to stay in the accord but appear powerless to stop their countries companies pulling out of Iran for fear of U.S. penalties.

And Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said the meeting would "send a united and determined signal" to the world that the other parties "will continue to respect the agreement".

With tensions rising over the strategic waterway, the European Union is proposing a plan for salvaging a multinational nuclear deal with Tehran after Washington withdrew, but Iranian President Hassan Rouhani told leaders in Paris and Berlin on Thursday that the package did not go far enough.

TRUMP: I made a deal with him, I shook hands with him. "I'll make my utmost efforts", Xi responded, according to the sources. Kim had pledged to work toward the "complete denuclearisation" in return for security guarantees from the US.

Maas told reporters that it's not possible to compensate all the losses of Iran because of the companies leaving Iran out of fear to lose the business with America.

"We advise businesses that want to keep investing (in Iran), we want to keep payment systems open, and we want to build security through widening the mandate of the European Investment Bank", he said.

Since Trump's announcement, Iran's rial currency has fallen, prices have risen and the country has been hit by street protests and strikes.

In the joint statement, Zarif and other top diplomats reconfirmed their commitment to the deal and its "economic dividends" for Iran, which has suffered worsening financial turbulence since Trump abandoned the accord. Modernization of the Arak heavy water reactor is seen as a key issue in the Iran nuclear deal, as the reactor could potentially produce the nuclear fuel for a warhead.

Washington considers Iran a state sponsor of terrorism, with links to Lebanon's Hezbollah, Hamas in the Palestinian territories and networks in Iraq and Yemen, and demands it stop supporting Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. Iran has said it had nothing to do with the plot and has demanded the official be released without delay.

Six people were arrested in Belgium, France and Germany, while the opposition group blamed the Iranian regime for the alleged plot.
