Sixth boy out of Thai cave, officials vow to ‘speed up’ operation

The 16-day-long ordeal of four boys, who were part of a 13-member group, trapped in a flooded cave system in Thailand ended Sunday as they were brought out safely by rescuers.

Four more young football players were rescued Monday from a flooded cave on day two of a unsafe rescue mission that so far has been an outrageous success.

Osottanakorn said the second rescue involved numerous same divers who brought the four boys out on Sunday.

But rescuing the remaining five people, which includes the boys' 25-year-old soccer coach, could take more than one operation, Narongsak said.

The rescued boys were airlifted to the Chiagrai Prachanukroh Hospital in Chiang Rai after initial treatment at a field hospital near the caves, and the four boys rescued Sunday were said to be "in good condition".

The rescue operation, which commenced on Sunday, was carried out in three phases.

Authorities have said extracting the entire team from the cave could take up to four days, but two straight days of success raised hopes that it could be done faster. That brought the total number of boys rescued to five.

Can you imagine what the parents are thinking when they try to lie their heads down every night, knowing what their boys have been enduring for over two weeks? The path out is considered especially complicated because of twists and turns in narrow flooded passages. Thai authorities are hustling to draw out water from the flooded cave before more rains are forecast to hit the northern region. The operation to get them out was supposed to resume only after new oxygen tanks could be placed along their route of escape, which is partially underwater. Efforts to pump water out of the cave have been set back by heavy downpours.

Somboon Sompiangjai, 38, the father of one of the trapped boys, said parents had been told by rescuers that the "strongest children" would be brought out first. Food, electrolyte drinks, drinking water, medicine and oxygen canisters have been delivered to them.

The other, and perhaps more worrying, was that oxygen levels in the complex were falling close to risky levels.

They have been guiding the boys through darkness and submerged passageways towards the mouth of the Tham Luang cave system.

None of the boys' identities have been publicly revealed.

Following the initial rescues Sunday, the operation was paused for about 10 hours while divers replenished air tanks along the exit tunnel.

None of the boys has been identified.

Doctors are monitoring them for any illnesses they may have picked up in the cave, and supervising efforts to build up their strength after they spent more than two weeks with little food and no natural light.

It appears that the team were going into the cave as part of an initiation ceremony which tasked the boys with reaching the end of the cave and returning having written their names on the far wall.
