The president's comment continues his reluctance to strongly condemn President Putin head on, publicly at least, for what us intelligence agencies have concluded was clear interference by the Kremlin, under Putin's direction, to disrupt the 2016 presidential election. But in return, Putin said he would expect the U.S. to allow Russian investigators to question what he called fugitives on American soil. "So certainly as the leader of a country you would have to hold him responsible, yes", Trump told CBS News in an interview. "And then, all of a sudden, he's gone haywire because they got to him and they probably- got him to say things that maybe he doesn't even mean".

The Kentucky Republican especially commended Trump's meeting with Putin given the establishment's resistance to any form of détente with Russian Federation. The statement "I don't see nay reason why it would be Russia" was well down the list of problematic utterances from Trump.

Sen. Lindsay Graham, R-South Carolina, said on Twitter that there is a "BIG discrepancy" between Trump's statement and warning by Coats.

Trump faced withering criticism earlier this week after he seemed to side with Putin over the USA intelligence community over Russian interference in the 2016 election.

President Donald Trump speaks during his meeting with members of his cabinet in Cabinet Room of the White House in Washington, Wednesday, July 18, 2018.

"The sentence should have been I don't see any reason. why it wouldn't be Russian Federation".

Asked by a journalist before a morning Cabinet meeting whether Russian Federation was still targeting the United States, Trump looked at the reporter, shook his head and said, "No".

The Trump administration has faced a rocky road since the president's summit last month with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in advancing Trump's goal of complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.

"Let's be very clear, just so everybody knows: Russian Federation did meddle with our elections", said House Speaker Paul Ryan, another steady Trump political ally.

Trump and Putin: the odd couple
The " CBS Evening News" published the interview with Trump from his golf club in Turnberry, Scotland, on Sunday morning. But simply because he considers these actors to be a "foe" does not necessarily mean that they are bad, he clarified.

"The president is wrong", GOP Sen. They would rather go to war than see this.

The idea to allow Russian officials the opportunity to question certain US -linked individuals arose after the Justice Department indicted 12 GRU military intelligence officers for their involvement in Russian efforts to meddle in the 2016 USA election.

In a follow-up tweet, Trump wrote that Russian Federation has agreed to help in delicate negotiations with North Korea.

Trump's comment sparked yet another apoplectic round of outrage among mainstream media members and Democratic lawmakers, claiming the president was again denying the US intelligence community's conclusion that Russian Federation meddled in the 2016 presidential election and is doing so again in the 2018 midterm elections. Those previous comments, delivered alongside Russian President Vladimir Putin at a summit press conference Monday, had prompted blistering, bipartisan criticism at home.

He, however, backtracked a day later on his return to the USA and said that he misspoke in the joint news conference. "We're also living in a grown-up world", he said.

Both parties called for Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and other officials to appear before Congress and tell exactly what happened during Trump's two-hour private session with Putin.

"I was in the room as well, and I didn't take it the way you did", Sanders told Jackson.

"The president also sees this as an opportunity, as he said many times, to be able to work with Russian Federation".
