In brief: Amazon's sales-oriented pseudo-holiday Prime Day has kicked off, but all is not well for the retail giant.

Amazon held its annual Prime Day earlier this week, and the company said the 36-hour event was the biggest shopping event in its history.

The Echo Dot and Fire TV Stick with Alexa Voice Remote were the two best selling items, according to Amazon.

The glowing numbers came even though Amazon was hit with a massive glitch that caused its USA and United Kingdom sites to crash at the beginning of the event.

Amazon also said that 35% of new Prime members it added on Prime Day came from tier 2-3 towns.

According to the Sun Sentinel, this Amazon Prime Day you can price-match with these ten retailers to get the same great deals.

For the first time, members in Australia, Singapore, the Netherlands and Luxembourg participated in Prime Day. For the first time, Prime members celebrated Prime Day at Whole Foods Market where they saved millions of dollars with extra Prime Day deals. If you're not already a member, there's no better time than Prime Day to make the most of your 30-day free trial.

Twitter lit up with screen shots of Amazon's Prime Day failures, which featured photos of dogs and the words "sorry". Amazon Prime Rewards Visa cardmembers also got 10% back, double the standard 5%-back reward.

Hamas, which governs the Gaza Strip, condemned the move and called the initial closing last week a "crime against humanity". Israel says the Islamist group is using the demonstrations as a cover to carry out attacks on Israeli border communities.

While Prime Day was undoubtedly a success this year, the rocky start certainly left a sour taste in some customer's mouths.

"Our analysis indicates the robust North America retail channel is showing no signs of slowing down in [the second half of 2018] as the Prime membership moat that Bezos & Co. have built is gaining further steam in the field and the Amazon flywheel effect is further playing out globally among consumers", he wrote in a note to clients.

The issue was "especially problematic" considering that numerous Prime deals were only available during set windows of time, noted GlobalData Retail Managing Director Neil Saunders, in comments emailed to Retail Dive.

But retailers trying to cash in on Prime Day also have to compete with Amazon's discounts.

In a statement, Amazon says that many people are shopping successfully, and that in the first hour of Prime Day in the USA, customers ordered more items compared to the first hour previous year.

Here's the biggest bummer of Prime Day for Nintendo fans: Very few Switch games or 3DS games have gone on sale.

New brands like L.A. -based nutrition startup Truwomen, which only launched a month ago, not only saw high demand for its products but experienced a significant uptick on its Instagram following.
