It might not happen at next month's PGA Championship, and it might not happen next year at two of his cherished arenas, the Masters at Augusta National, and the U.S. Open at Pebble Beach, but ESPN thinks it will eventually happen.

For Rose, there was pride at getting so near after needing a birdie on No. 18 on Friday to even make it to the weekend. The 35-year-old Italian charged up the leaderboard at Carnoustie on Saturday, posting a 6-under 65-a career low at The Open. "It didn't feel any different to be next to the lead and knowing what I need to do".

For McIlroy, the only regret was that he started his charge too late.

Only 14 of the 79 players on breezy Sunday shot a sub-par round but he churned out par after par before birdies at the 14th and 18th earned him the Claret Jug.

The British Open bustled with excitement as the occasion began to unfold, with mobile phones zooming in to capture the moment from the best angle available.

But just when one of the greatest sporting comebacks of all time seemed on the cards, Woods failed to pull off a risky flop shot to get out of trouble on the 11th and ran up a deflating double bogey.

McIlroy's first birdie had come at the 296-yard 15th, where he drove into a greenside bunker and splashed out to six feet, but a bogey three holes from home dropped him back to seven under. The Italian won the PGA Championship at Wentworth in May which pretty much guaranteed his third appearance for Team Europe. 'I remember thinking Francesco was so good from tee to green, if only he wasn't so mechanical with his short game, ' he said.

"Chaotic is probably the best way to put it", he said with a smile.

"It's just going to go in the memory bank as a positive", he said. Molinari, sitting on a sofa and watching TV in what looked like a scoring trailer, could finally celebrate.

Woods later confronted the spectator who shouted as he was mid-swing, with his drive still ending up on the fairway.

'When I had my first victory in America a few weeks ago it was at his tournament and now I got to play alongside him to win the Claret Jug. I was in the final group. Either that, or they're a little bit over-served (with drink). "I played the way I wanted to play this week and it gives me a lot of encouragement going into the final major of the year".

And then there was Kisner, looking to go wire-to-wire.

What was your reaction to Tiger Woods' resurgence? A little more than a year ago, on the heels of a fourth surgical procedure to try and fix his ravaged back, Woods told ESPN's Scott Van Pelt that he might never play competitive golf again.
