Noland is among the 38,000 people evacuated after the so-called Carr Fire roared into the outskirts of Redding in Shasta County, leaving five people dead, including two firefighters, a woman and her two great-grandchildren.

In the city of Redding, which has been at the forefront of the Carr Fire, officials sounded more hopeful for the first time in days as the strong winds of the last several days abated.

Gouvea spoke at a news conference with fire and law enforcement officials. The victim's identity was not released.

Earlier on Saturday, Redding police said they were trying to locate 17 people reported missing by loved ones or friends after the blaze, which has been burning since Monday, violently erupted into a firestorm that jumped the Sacramento River into the western part of Redding. Hundreds of homes were destroyed and about 50,000 people were under evacuation orders. Fueled by high temperatures, wind and low humidity, the blaze destroyed multiple homes and at least one historic building. A count by The Associated Press found more than 300 homes destroyed. And 150 fire engines were on the way from as far away as Florida, officials said today.

They're spinning vortexes of air, ash and fire, and are also known as "fire tornadoes". Authorities had not reopened any evacuated neighbourhoods where fires raged due to safety and ongoing investigations.

"They go into the steepest of the steep, the most rugged of the rugged areas", said Mike Theune, a spokesman with the parks.

"It's the craziest frickin' thing you have ever seen", he said, his eyes filled with tears. But then he composed himself.

He said the fire consumed the house, the walls collapsed and the roof is covering the footprint of the home, making it hard to access.

Decker took the day off work Friday and drove his motorcycle to the home to look for members of the family but only found the smoldering remains of the house.

Liz Williams loaded up two kids in her auto and then found herself locked in bumper-to-bumper traffic with neighbors trying to flee from Lake Redding Estates.

The children's mother, Sherry Bledsoe, was quoted by the newspaper as saying, "My kids are deceased, that's all I can say", as she left the sheriff's office on Saturday.

The death toll from the fire climbed to five after the bodies of Melody Bledsoe, 70, and her great-grandchildren, James Robert, 5, and Emily Roberts, 4, were recovered from Bledsoe's home in Redding, relatives said.

The sixth victim, who was not identified, did not flee despite receiving an evacuation warning, Bosenko said.

The blaze remained unpredictable, said Chris Anthony, a division chief with the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire).

Eight-one-year-old Don Ray Smith was a bulldozer operator who was helping clear vegetation in the path of the wildfire when he died. According to officials, Jeremy Stoke, a fire inspector with the Redding Fire Department, died fighting the deadly blaze Friday.

An army of some 3,500 firefighters and a squadron of 17 water-dropping helicopters had carved buffer lines around 5 percent of the fire's 100-mile perimeter by Sunday.

"Extreme fire conditions continue to challenge firefighters last night", Cal Fire said.

"But I still tried to get down in there and they come and stopped me and wouldn't let me get down in there".

"Over the years, we're putting more people in harm's way", he said.

Cal Fire said the Cranston Fire, about 110 miles (177 km) east of Los Angeles had blackened 12,300 acres and was 16 percent contained. The fire doubled in size Saturday, growing to more than 83,800 acres while putting residents and firefighters in harm's way.

Hughes, the firefighter killed near Yosemite, was originally from Hawaii.

Hughes had worked with the Arrowhead hotshots for four years.
