North Korea developing new missiles: report

Trump said last week that his administration's plan to dismantle North Korea's nuclear weapons was "going very well".

What do the latest reports say?

An Indonesian delegation led by Coordinating Human Development and Cultural Affairs Minister Puan Maharani delivered a personal invitation to Kim during their visit to North Korea this week.

It was not the first time U.S. intelligence clashed with the president's optimism.

In his response, Kim Yong-nam reportedly conveyed his government's appreciation to President Jokowi on the invitation and said he would soon present it to leader Kim Jong-un.

Activity seen at a factory in North Korea that produced the country's first intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) indicates it is constructing new missiles, a US-based newspaper has reported quoting intelligence officials.

Instead, senior North Korean officials have discussed their intention to deceive Washington about the number of nuclear warheads and missiles they have, as well as the types and numbers of facilities, and to rebuff worldwide inspectors, according to intelligence gathered by US agencies.

These are not the first reports that North Korea may be continuing its weapons programme, casting doubt on the real impact of the summit in Singapore.

The Washington Post said imagery from the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency suggests ongoing work on at least one missile at the factory. Jeffrey Lewis of the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies told the Post the site is "active".

"We see them going to work, just as before", one United States official told The Washington Post.

"Offer up 20 first-gen warheads, claim you are or have disarmed, but keep the good stuff in presumably clandestine facilities and hope they aren't discovered", Narang said. It has in the past two years quickly advanced its nuclear programme.

However, CNN also reported last week that, according to an official with close knowledge of North Korea's position on the matter, continued negotiations between the United States and North Korea hinge on Washington's willingness to make a "bold move" and agree to a peace treaty with Pyongyang.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo testified last week that verifying North Korea was taking steps toward denuclearizing would "definitely take time", and declined to say publicly whether the regime was making progress on the nuclear front.

The classified intelligence comes weeks after Trump's June summit with leader Kim Jong Un. "Fissile Material" is uranium or plutonium that can be used to produce the nuclear fission reaction necessary for nuclear weapons.

This indicated that there had not been a complete stop in activity during the summit talks.

North Korea has threatened to attack the US and its allies with nuclear weapons on numerous occasions.
