Chipotle slumps after illness complaints linked to OH outlet

The chain continues to grapple with the financial implications of the 2015 crisis, which triggered a federal investigation and prompted the company to implement new safety standards and food-handling procedures.

The local health department told Business Insider that it had received 518 calls and emails related to the possible illness outbreak.

Chipotle was informed of two customer complaints of illness at its Powell restaurant, Laurie Schalow, the company's chief communications officer, said in an email.

At least 140 people said they had fallen sick after eating at a Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc restaurant in OH, sending shares of the burrito chain down as much as 9 percent on Tuesday. Diversified Restaurant is trading at a lower price-to-earnings ratio than Chipotle Mexican Grill, indicating that it is now the more affordable of the two stocks.

"They are under a microscope, and any blip that arises is important for the business on a scale different than others", Chapman added, noting, for perspective, that there are an estimated 48 million cases of foodborne illnesses in the United States each year. Chipotle management said it was unable to get in touch with the health department to report the illnesses.

Chipotle said it planned to reopen the OH restaurant on Tuesday after it deep cleaned the restaurant and removed all exposed foods and single-use equipment, pending approval from the local health department.

Chipotle has been trying to overcome a tarnished reputation tied to multiple food safety incidents at its restaurants.

Last July, Chipotle retrained kitchen crews on food safety after identifying a sick employee as the cause of a Norovirus outbreak that forced it to briefly close a restaurant in Virginia.

That news also surfaced through when 89 reports and 133 customers reported falling sick. The closure comes as Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc. works to recover from a series of food scares that sent sales plunging.
