Lynchburg floods: Flooding dam sparks evacuations in US city

A deluge of rain in Virginia has prompted evacuations below an overflowing dam.

A failure of the College Lake Dam near Lynchburg could flood the city with five metres of water in seven minutes, news outlets reported Thursday evening, citing statements from the National Weather Service (NSW).

It was feared that if the dam did fail and collapse, water would flood from the creek into the James River, which is close to the city's business district.

Members of the Campbell County Fire Department wade through water at an apartment complex in Lynchburg, Va., Aug. 2, 2018.

He said that they were now focused on evacuations and road closures near and around the dam, warning that more could be on the way.

A truck passes a partially submerged abandoned vehicle in Lynchburg, Va. during a thunderstorm, August 2, 2018. But the crew monitoring the dam last night raised concerns about structural integrity after just about six inches of rain.

Roughly 124 homes remain threatened in the city of 80,000, which is located in the Blue Ridge Mountains.

The closure comes as Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc. works to recover from a series of food scares that sent sales plunging. Chipotle has been trying to overcome a tarnished reputation tied to multiple food safety incidents at its restaurants.

The following is a list of block ranges that would be affected in the event of a dam break. If you are in low lying areas below the College Lake Dam, you should move to higher ground immediately. The city of Lynchburg owns the dam and is responsible for its upkeep.

And every proposed fix would cost millions of dollars.

But "high hazard" refers to the level of risk such as loss of life or economic damage if a breach were to occur, according to the report.

The dam was deemed intact Friday morning, CNN reported, although water has continued to cascade over the dam and into Blackwater Creek, which is two miles from downtown Lynchburg.

"Unfortunately", he said, "a lot of rain in a short period of time can cause this".

Lynchburg Director of Water Resources Tim Mitchell said at a 3 p.m. news conference that the dam would continue to be watched around the clock.

Then, Gearing said, workers can stabilize the bridge in preparation for the next storm approaching.
