Saudi Arabia has ordered roughly 15,000 Saudis studying in Canada to leave.

Since Monday social media has been saturated by the surprising news that Saudi Arabia made a decision to expel the Canadian ambassador, along with freezing trade and investment ties with Canada. It also suspended new trade dealings with Canada.

The arrests appear to be at odds with the reforms promised by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who lifted the ban on women drivers in June and allowed movie theatres to open across the country for the first time in April.

Canada, an oil producer in its own right, brings in barrels from overseas to satisfy the needs of certain regional energy markets.

The true impact of Saudi Arabia's flexing of diplomatic muscle is still unclear.

Momani called it, "getting tough on Canada", which she said other countries in the region might welcome if they view Canadian foreign policy to be led by human rights concerns.

Saudi state airline Saudia also announced Monday that it would suspend flights to and from Toronto starting August 13.

Saudi Arabia's main state wheat buying agency has told grains exporters it will no longer buy Canadian wheat and barley in its global tenders, European traders said on Tuesday, as a diplomatic dispute between the two countries escalates.

Oil rallies on expectation inventories will drop
West Texas Intermediate ( WTI) crude futures were at $68.70 per barrel at 0847 GMT, down 26 cents from their last settlement. A lot of this is the risk premium priced in for Iran and when do we start seeing an impact on supply there", Patterson said.

What's the response been so far, at home and overseas?

Canadian Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland was quoted by Reuters as saying to reporters on Monday that "it would be a shame for those students if they are deprived of the opportunity to study here". Spokeswoman Marie-Pier Baril reiterated her country's position "for the protection of human rights, very much including women's rights, and freedom of expression around the world".

"The Embassy of Canada to Saudi Arabia, in Riyadh, continues its regular operations, including consular services", the statement added. The U.S. also said it continued to encourage the Saudi government to "ensure all are afforded due process".

The dispute looks set to damage what is a modest bilateral trade relationship worth almost $4 billion a year.

The United Arab Emirates, a strong regional ally, supported the Saudi response to Canada, with a senior government official calling Ottawa's behavior 'unacceptable'.

Who is Dennis Horak and where is he now?

Saudi Arabia has called Canada's actions a "blatant interference in the Kingdom's domestic affairs" and has responded with a series of diplomatic measures, including freezing new trade and investment with the country.
