McCain was diagnosed with glioblastoma back in July 2017. the same type of cancer that took the life of Senator Ted Kennedy back in 2009.

President Reuven Rivlin bid farewell to the "great leader", whom he hailed as a "defender of his people, a man of strong values, and a true supporter of Israel".

The former president said: "John McCain and I were members of different generations, came from completely different backgrounds, and competed at the highest level of politics".

He was shot down over Hanoi in October of 1967 while on his 23rd bombing mission inside a Skyhawk dive bomber. McCain deployed his parachute and plunged into a lake, breaking his leg and both arms. He was soon placed in solitary confinement, where he would remain for the next two years. He attempted suicide, but was stopped by guards.

He was released in March of 1973, along with others from a POW camp. The physical and mental hell he went through in service to our country.

His time as a prisoner-of-war during the Vietnam War won him the status of hero and patriot.

He moved to Arizona and joined his second wife, Cindy, a Phoenix teacher.

He blamed his own party for losing strongholds like the Philadelphia suburbs, where the Democratic Party gained a foothold that year. He was elected to Congress in 1982 and the Senate in 1986.

Throughout his time in the Senate, McCain made campaign reform one of his signature efforts and fought to restore diplomatic relations with Vietnam in the 1990s.

His support for the war in Iraq worked against him when the majority of Americans turned out to be against the conflict.

"When Mr. Trump attacks women and demeans the women in our nation and in our society, that is a point where I just have to part company", the senator said.

"I think it is going to be another one of those swing states, I really do. They can not be degraded and demeaned in that fashion", he said.

McCain suffered from an aggressive form of brain cancer.

Three days before the presidential election, McCain returned - alongside Tina Fey as his much-mocked running mate, Sarah Palin - for one last SNL hurrah.

The Senate's top Democrat, New York's Chuck Schumer, said he wants to rename the Senate building that housed McCain's suite of offices after McCain. "He loved me, and I loved him". McCain's 2011 prediction that Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad, whom Russian Federation backs militarily, would not survive long has proven untrue, Pushkov noted, adding that "Assad's overthrow and death did not wait for McCain".
