The National Hurricane Center (NHC) issued a Tropical Storm watch for the northern Gulf Coast Sunday - from the Alabama-Florida border as far as Morgan City, Louisiana. The center noted that tropical-storm-force wind gusts will be possible today across portions of South Florida and the Florida Keys.

The storm has already begun lashing South Florida with high winds and heavy rains as it moved west-northwest at 16 miles per hour.

A tropical storm whipped the southern tip of Florida with high winds and rain on Monday morning and was forecast to gain strength as it passed over the Gulf of Mexico toward Louisiana, officials said.

The system is forecast to become Tropical Storm Gordon by 8 p.m. Monday as it moves into the Gulf of Mexico, the National Hurricane Center predicts.

While the first half of the Atlantic Hurricane season (June - August) was less active than predicted, the second half of the season has already produced three tropical waves.

Another impact from Gordon will be rough seas and a high risk of rip currents along area beaches.

Tropical Storm Watches are in place from areas east of Baton Rouge through the Gulf Coast of Alabama until Wednesday. There will be very heavy rain which could lead to flood for parts of Louisiana, Texas, and Mississippi.
