Tropical Storm Florence A "Potential Threat"

Storm season peaks: Hurricane Florence still far from landfall, uncertainty remains for East Coast

According to the National Hurricane Service, the storm was moving at west 9 miles per hour as of 5 a.m. Saturday morning.

Both the European and American models have shifted the storm westward, rather than northerly, increasing the likelihood it will come close to or make landfall somewhere on the East Coast.

Gov. Roy Cooper announced the declaration in a news release Friday evening as the storm neared Bermuda.

At noon, the National Hurricane Centre in the United States reported that wind shear, which has sapped the storms strength, had “likely reached its maximum” and would dwindle as Florence continued on its course.

In scenario two, if the high pressure over the central Atlantic strengthens, then Florence may complete its 3,500-mile journey over the Atlantic, landing right on the US East Coast.

The other is wind shear.

Accuweather forecasts Florence to hit Bermuda waters on Tuesday.

Storm season peaks: Hurricane Florence still far from landfall, uncertainty remains for East Coast

As of early September, the 2018 hurricane season had been calm compared to the frenzy of 2017, in which three major storms - Harvey, Irma, and Maria - wrought havoc in the Caribbean and on the US mainland.

The US East Coast is bracing for Florence as it approaches the coastline.

Tropical storm Helene is presenting the most imminent danger as it tracks towards the western coast of the African continent, around the southernmost Cabo Verde Islands.

Forecasters expect the storm to bring tropical storm conditions to parts of the Cabo Verde Islands on Saturday night.

First up there's Tropical Storm Florence.

Forecasters at the National Hurricane Center are now juggling predictions for two tropical storms, Helene and Florence, a tropical depression and another low-pressure area that popped up Friday between the US mainland and Florence. A gradual turn toward the west-northwest with an increase in forward speed is expected early next week. The forecast track has the storm strengthening to a hurricane next week as is tracks west. After passing the Cabo Verde Islands the system was not expected to pose a direct threat to land for at least several days. It was more than 1,700 miles from the eastern-most Caribbean islands early Saturday. The National Hurricane Center gives it only a 10 percent chance of organizing into at least a tropical depression.
