Williams told Ramos. "You owe me an apology". I haven't cheated in my life.

Williams may have been referring to the US Open in 2009, when she received a point penalty against Kim Clijsters in the semifinals - deemed to have verbally abused a linesperson - and was called for hindrance for yelling during a point in the 2011 final against Sam Stosur.

Afterwards, Williams said Ramos had never taken a game from a man for calling him a thief and referenced Alize Cornet being given a code violation for changing her shirt on court earlier in the tournament as an another example of double standards within the game.

She added in her post-match news conference that she had asked Mouratoglou why he said he was coaching her.

"There's a lot of men out here that have said a lot of things", Williams said, "and because they are men, that doesn't happen".

Williams said. "That is not right". Twenty-year-old Naomi Osaka beat Serena Williams for the title, but the big story was the drama.

Serena Williams discusses a coaching violation warning given by umpire Carlos Ramos.

In the end it was Osaka making history but on a day of freakish events her victory will only be a footnote to what is sure to go down as one of the most infamous matches ever played at Flushing Meadows. Let's give everyone the credit where credit is due.

After Osaka's victory, the crowd erupted, with many booing in defense of Williams. "So congratulations, Naomi. No more booing".

"Because I'm a woman, you're going to take this away from me?" she said to officials.

A kid who just earned her first Grand Slam trophy and a winner's check for $3.8 million, and sure looked to have stamped herself as part of the sport's future.

Controversy aside, Osaka simply played the better tennis, preventing Williams from winning a record-equalling 24th Grand Slam title with Ausrtralian Margaret Court.

Osaka, the 20th seed, has met and defeated Williams once - at Miami in March.

Williams couldn't hide her emotional reaction during the game, crying out about how male players haven't been penalized for the same incidents.

The 36-year-old is back in the final in NY for the first time in four years and one step away, as she was at Wimbledon, from equalling Margaret Court's all-time record for slam singles titles.

On that day, too, the younger player prevailed. Osaka got out to a quick 4-1 lead behind two breaks of serve.

"It feels like this suit represents all the women that have been through a lot mentally, physically, with their body, to come back and have confidence and to believe in themselves", she said at the time.

The fall-out from this final is likely to rumble on for some time, with the long-time coaching partnership between Williams and Mouratoglou now under real strain.

Williams streaked into the US Open having won the Australian Open and Wimbledon that year and was chasing a second straight title in Flushing Meadows.

Williams stood her ground after the match and didn't hold back then, either.
