Barack Obama says midterms represent chance for sanity

"What bothers me is that if what was written was true, then there is a cabal in the White House that's working against the president", said Paterson, who also served as the New York Democratic Party's chairman.

Obama acknowledged positive things had emerged from what he deemed the current "political darkness", like the activism of the students from Parkland High School, the surge of female candidates and the Me Too movement.

The party's "central organizing principle in foreign policy was the fight against communism and now they're cozying up to the former head of the KGB". "The other day when they carried a Barack Obama speech live for the first time in six years start to finish, I guarantee you it was driving Donald Trump out of his damn mind".

Appearing in Southern California on Saturday, the former president took another swipe at his successor as he raised his profile campaigning for fellow Democrats to regain control of the House.

Former Obama communications director Dan Pfeiffer said on CNN that Obama can effectively reach voters in parts of the country he won in 2012, but which voted for Trump in 2016.

He told the audience at the Anaheim Convention Center, "If we don't step up, things can get worse". "I found he's very good - very good for sleeping!"

"We are bound by the notion that this is a government of and by and for the people", he said. "We're supposed to stand up to bullies".

In Orange County, Republicans held a 13-point edge in voter registration 10 years ago but that has shrunk to 3 points while independents, who tend to vote like Democrats in California, have climbed to 25 per cent.

The president was widely censured by officials from across the political spectrum, and later clarified that he condemned neo-Nazis and white supremacy.

Alibaba's Jack Ma 'to step down'
Ma maintains a prominent worldwide profile, frequently inviting global leaders to the company's Hangzhou headquarters. Ma started his journey with just U.S. $ 60,000 - loaned to him by friends, and started Alibaba in 1999.

His prescription, he said, was "when each of us as citizens say we are going to take it upon ourselves to do it differently".

The former President opened up with a more traditional historical digression about the progress and missteps of American history, but it didn't take him long to name-drop Trump - something Obama has mostly avoided since he left office - saying that Trump is a "symptom, not the cause" of the hatred and anger now gripping parts of the country.

At an event in North Dakota, Trump again brought up Obama's address.

"It's supposed to be the party... of fiscal conservatism".

Obama says there are no problems that can't be solved if "we're working together and we're true to the traditions that are the best in America". And he implored Americans to vote for those leaders.

"If it does happen, it's your fault, because you didn't go out to vote". "You can not doubt because you don't feel sufficiently inspired by this or that candidate".

"The biggest threat to our democracy is indifference", he said.

"Jeff should be investigating who the author of that piece was because I really believe it's national security", Trump said, adding he does not want the author in meetings requiring a high-level security clearance.

On his Twitter account, Trump did not respond directly but instead shared tweets attacking Obama, including one which accused him of "slick speaking" and being responsibile for "school shootings".
