The author of the anonymous op-ed in the New York Times that came from a "senior administration official" has already generated book deal offers of around $10 million.

"The people are not anonymous to me", he says.

Trump on Twitter quoted a Fox News description of the event without long-range nuclear missiles as a sign of North Korea's "commitment to denuclearize".

"People who work for him are anxious. that he will sign things or give orders that threaten the national security or the financial security of the country, or of the world", he told CBS.

Nixon was a mean-spirited man who took revenge on his enemies but compared to Mr Trump, he was bold, realistic, ambitious, thoughtful in foreign policy and - it nearly chokes me to write this - a liberal progressive compared to today's Republican party.

Woodward told NBC that Mattis and Kelly made "political statements to protect their jobs" when they denied making quotations attributed to them in his book.

The report came from journalist Bob Woodward's new book.

He went on to relate an episode in "Fear" in which former White House Economic Adviser Gary Cohn removed documents from Trump's desk that would end a trade agreement with South Korea so the president couldn't sign them.

Idlib residents urge Turkey to stave off regime attack
More than 60 air raids have taken place in southern Idlib, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. The Syrian government has been repeatedly accused of using chemical weapons in the long conflict.

Perhaps most damning are the words of Trump's own lawyers, who were apparently so terrified of the president testifying in the special counsel's investigation - because of his inability to tell the truth - that they appealed directly to Mueller not to subpoena him. In the piece, an unnamed senior administration official says people within the White House are actively "thwarting Mr. Trump's more misguided impulses". They would criticize the president behind his back and undermine his more radical suggestions, the book claims.

'Dems can't stand losing. He accused the media of trying to undermine the Trump administration and said he found that "incredibly disturbing".

Woodward's revelations, which are consistent with much of the reporting that's been done about this White House over the past 20 months, would ordinarily be a devastating multiday story.

In the interview, Woodward discussed his new book "Fear: Trump in the White House", and said Trump is fixated on the fact that the United States spends $US3.5 billion a year to station troops in South Korea in order to maintain military presence on the peninsula.

But Woodward said they are "not telling the truth".

"This is a big and very positive statement from North Korea", Donald Trump said in reference to North Korea holding a military parade without the customary display of nuclear weapons. If I did I would not have been elected President.

The essay said members of the administration were running a "two-track presidency", achieving Republican policy aims while sidelining the "amoral ... impetuous, adversarial, petty and ineffective" Trump until he was out of office.
