Shaw said that, if Florence's track shifts more south and forecasts show Alachua County is expected to receive tropical storm force winds, the county would start opening its primary, first-tier shelters.

The Met Office said: "Storm Helene is expected to push north-east towards the United Kingdom late Monday, before clearing quickly to the north of Scotland through Tuesday morning".

However, it has put out a yellow "be aware" warning which extends across much of Dumfries and Galloway.

Meanwhile, what could be the world's most unsafe storm at the moment is Super Typhoon Mangkhut, which now has winds of 165 miles per hour (with 200 miles per hour gusts) and is taking aim on the Philippines, according to the Joint Typhoon Warning Center.

Florence is the most risky of three tropical systems in the Atlantic.

Of the Atlantic's two active hurricanes - Florence and Helene - Florence posed the greatest threat to land, as it neared the Carolinas and Virginia as a Category 3 hurricane.

The public is also advised to take care near to the coastline, with injuries from large waves and beach material being thrown onto the seafront.

Winds in the rest of England, Wales and north-western France will be blustery, but are unlikely to be damaging.

It is forecast to move north-westwards, passing the Azores Islands on Saturday and heading towards north-western Europe.

It's not clear if the storm is expected to strengthen back into a hurricane after it hits the eastern Caribbean.
