Trump Says Democrats Inflated Puerto Rico Death Toll From Hurricane Maria

Massive stockpile of bottled water found in Puerto Rico a year after Maria

President Trump is facing widespread backlash after he tried to claim Tuesday that his administration's response to Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico past year was "an incredible unsung success", in response to questions about what we could learn from Hurricane Maria as Hurricane Florence approaches the Carolinas coast.

"Those are just the facts of what happens when a disgusting hurricane hits an isolated place like an island", Ryan said when asked about Trump's tweet.

The study, which was conducted without the backing of any political group, surveyed 3,000 residences across the United States' territory and found Puerto Ricans died at a much higher rate in the four months following the hurricane than in the same time period a year earlier.

Trump later added in a second tweet that the larger reported death toll was the work of Democrats attempting to recast the president's successful response to the tragedy.

The Republican president suggested the hurricane death toll was artificially boosted by adding those who had passed away from natural causes such as old age.

Trump bristled at criticism of his administration's handling of the Puerto Rico disaster as Hurricane Florence approached the coast of North Carolina with heavy rains that forecasters warned would cause catastrophic flooding across a wide swath of the USA southeast.

Mr Trump you can try and bully us with your tweets BUT WE KNOW OUR LIVES MATTER. You should never be content with everything we did.

Hurricane Florence top winds dip to 130 miles per hour
Behind Isaac , Hurricane Helene is picking up strength, with twist paces of more than 105 miles per hour as of Monday afternoon. Forecasters cautioned, though, Florence could impact anywhere from northern Florida to north of the Washington, D.C., area.

San Juan, Puerto Rico, Mayor Carmen Yulin Cruz slammed Donald Trump as "paranoid" and "delusional".

Puerto Rico was recovering from Hurricane Irma before Hurricane Maria hit in September 2017, destroying roads and bridges and leaving much of the Caribbean island without electricity for months.

In a second tweet Thursday, Trump cast blame on Democrats, who he said are trying to make him look bad. "My only consideration was the well-being of the Puerto Rican people". "The casualties mounted for a long time, and I have no reason to dispute those numbers".

George Washington University researchers are standing by their study that concluded the death toll following Hurricane Maria was 2,975.

However Trump implied the death toll was revised for political reasons. One thing's for sure, and I told (the media) before, one thing I'm proud, we're standing up on our own two feet. "It was devastated. This was a terrible storm", he said. "The loss of any life is tragic", Scott continued, "the extent of lives lost as a result of Maria is heart wrenching".

Photos have emerged showing 20,000 pallets of bottled water meant for victims still sitting on a runway in Ceiba, Puerto Rico, a year after the storm. "It's just what happened". That left him with enough phone time to insult Jamie Dimon, the J.P. Morgan Chase CEO who said he could beat Trump in 2020 because he's "smarter than he is".
