Christine Blasey Ford is asking for the hearing on Capitol Hill in which she will testify against supreme court nominee Brett Kavanaugh be moved to next Thursday, strengthening the prospect of a dramatic showdown on Capitol Hill over Ford's accusation that he assaulted her when they were in high school in Maryland. If she doesn't appear Monday, Senate judiciary committee Chairman Chuck Grassley said the Senate will go ahead with Kavanaugh's confirmation vote. In an interview with The Washington Post, Blasey said Kavanaugh pinned her down on a bed and groped her as Judge, who also appeared to be drunk, watched.

Ford's attorneys raised the possibility of subpoenaing several witnesses including Mark Judge, who she says egged Kavanaugh on during the assault.

This isn't the first time allegations have come up during a Supreme Court confirmation hearing.

Among the requests, the one that appeared to be non-negotiable for Ford was a Monday appearance. The White House. Judge Kavanaugh has not asked to have the FBI investigate these claims. Whether or not there's conclusive proof of the alleged assault, every senator is entitled to vote yes or no on elevating Kavanaugh from his current position as a federal appeals court judge to the pinnacle of American law based on their individual, subjective assessments of whatever testimony is provided.

Which would make Democrats very happy, even if - especially if - Kavanaugh is confirmed.

Katz also said that senators should be the questioners, and not outside counsel.

A handful of pivotal senators have yet to disclose how they will ultimately vote on Kavanaugh's confirmation, including Republican Senators Susan Collins of ME and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska. Because Ford's accusation is already public, Grassley argued that it was appropriate for the Senate to step in with its own investigation as lawmakers did when the Hill allegation first became public.

Kavanaugh denies that account, which Christine Blasey Ford says happened when they were teenagers.

"She's quite gregarious and quite a good listener - and kind of the family glue I would say", Peters recalled.

It is possible Ford will be open to testifying sometime next week about the allegation, though the conditions under which she would do so have not yet been determined.

On Thursday, most Republicans had stuck to the timeline of holding a hearing on Monday, as well as Grassley's decision to limit the hearing to two witnesses: Kavanaugh and Ford.

Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh arrives on the first day of his confirmation hearing in front of the Senate on Capitol Hill in Washington, on September 4, 2018.

Taylor Foy, spokesman for Grassley, said: "We are happy that Dr. Ford's attorneys are now engaging with the Committee".

White House adviser Kellyanne Conway, who has encouraged Ford to be heard, said on CNN on Friday that Ford's requests were a "laundry list of demands".

Republican and Democratic Judiciary Committee staffers spoke with Katz and Ford attorney Lisa Banks by phone on Thursday to negotiate on a potential hearing for next week.

"We already had a hearing, " Cornyn said.
