Martinez, 35, was out for a run in the 1400 block of 11th Street Northwest when she was stabbed multiple times around 8 p.m. on Tuesday, September 18.

"You have a young woman out here exercising in a neighborhood, a very, very safe neighborhood", D.C. Police Chief Peter Newsham said during a recent press conference.

Anthony Crawford, 23, was arrested on Wednesday, September 19, in connection to the stabbing death of 35-year-old Wendy Martinez.

Once police arrived they secured the area and tried to revive Martinez, while also talking to eyewitnesses about the man responsible for the murder. "So it was a combination of efforts by the community, by the police, that we were able to get this guy relatively quick".

After being stabbed, Martinez stumbled away and into a nearby takeout restaurant, where surveillance video showed the woman appearing to alert customers to her attacker's location.

Cora Martinez said she had gone with her daughter to shop for a wedding dress. She called her a vibrant, handsome young woman who was in the midst of the "most lovely moment of her life" before she was killed. She lived close to where the stabbing happened, Chief Newsham said.

"I want to say that I have forgiven", she said. He was ordered to remain under juvenile supervision until he turned 21, but was let go at one point when he was 20 and vanished from the group home for a month, the Post reported, citing court documents.

Police say an avid runner who was killed in a residential neighborhood in the nation's capital was likely a random target.

CNN was unable to determine early Thursday afternoon whether Crawford had legal representation. She added the seemingly random attack is "damaging" to D.C. residents' sense of safety.

The prosecutor told the judge that this was a vicious crime and Crawford had tested positive for cocaine after his arrest.

Police provided little information about the suspect, saying only that he had a criminal history and was not homeless. She was engaged to be married last week. "Our thoughts and prayers are with Wendy's family and friends", the statement said. "There is a hole in our heart that will never be replaced".

"We are deeply saddened by this senseless tragedy", reads their statement, composed by Martinez's mother.

Cora Martinez said the week following Wendy's engagement was the happiest in her daughter's life.

Her family said that she and her boyfriend got engaged just one week prior to her death.

As for the family, this final desperate act of defiance and her instinct to survive brings them some level of comfort.
