"Get on the ground!" one man yells.

"There are a number of non-military victims, including women and children who had come to watch the parade", the agency quoted an unnamed official source as saying.

Twenty people have been wounded in an attack on a military parade in Iran. "They were just aimlessly shooting around and did not have a specific target".

He added that none of the terrorists could escape, noting that other reports about the details of the attack are not confirmed.

The semi-official news agency Mehr said further shooting broke out as some of the attackers who managed to escape were being chased. Two of them were killed and two others were detained.

Iran closed two border crossings with neighboring Iraq following Saturday morning's armed attack during a military parade in southwestern Iran, Iraqi border crossing officials told Kurdistan 24.

The Guards used the missiles to attack militants in Syria previous year and also targeted an Iranian Kurdish opposition group in northern Iraq with a missile strike in early September.

Oil-rich Khuzestan in the past has seen attacks oil pipelines by Arab separatists. The province has a large ethnic Arab community, many of them Sunni, the Muslim denomination to which IS adheres and which is a minority in Shiite Iran. Iran has blamed its Mideast archrival, the Sunni kingdom of Saudi Arabia, for funding their activity. State media in Saudi Arabia did not immediately acknowledge the attack.

Earlier, Governor-General of Ahvaz Gholamreza Shariati had told the state-run news agency IRNA that "the wounded have been transferred to Ahwaz hospitals". The militants have made a string of false claims in the wake of major defeats in Iraq and Syria.

Trump will fail in his confrontation with Iran, just like Iraq's Saddam Hussein, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said, referring to the war in the 1980s between the two Middle Eastern powers and vowing that Tehran will not abandon its missiles.

Rouhani has criticized the Guards' political involvement but senior commanders of the force have pushed back since Trump withdrew from the nuclear deal, which was seen as Rouhani's biggest political achievement.

"Iran neither put its defensive arms aside nor lessens its defensive capabilities", Rouhani said.

Saturday's attack comes after a coordinated Islamic State assault on parliament and the shrine of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini in Teheran in June previous year.

At least 18 people were killed and over 50 wounded in the 2017 operation that saw gunmen carrying Kalashnikov rifles and explosives storm the Parliament complex.
