Tests confirm an ACL tear for Jimmy Garoppolo 49ers start preparing for next step

Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo will need season-ending surgery on his injured left knee.

The 49ers feared quarterback Garoppolo suffered an ACL injury while trying to lead a comeback against the Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium on Sunday, coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed after the game. He will not play again in 2018 after signing a 5-year, $137 million deal with the 49ers during the offseason. Beathard is now the only other quarterback on San Francisco's roster, so he'll presumably start in Garoppolo's absence barring a trade or free-agent signing.

The injury is a massive blow to the 49ers offense. Beathard, the grandson of Hall of Fame personnel maven Bobby Beathard, went 1-4 as the starter in 2017 after replacing an ineffective Brian Hoyer, completing 54.9 percent of his passes for 4 TDs, 6 INTs and a 64.9 passer rating. But with Garoppolo and new running back Jerick McKinnon both knocked out for the season with torn ACLs in September, those high hopes have been put on hold.

Sarri won't call Hazard and Courtois despite transfer fears
We'll need him at his best in order to sustain our 100% record in the Premier League this season. As a defender, I think, 'can I get at him? I thought it was better to have training and rest.

Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, whom Garoppolo backed up for three-and-a-half seasons in New England before last season's trade, said he "felt terrible" for Garoppolo during a Monday morning radio interview.

Savage started nine games over the last three seasons for the Texans while Clemens has made 64 appearances during his 12-year career.
