"I look forward to a vote and for people to come out of the woodwork from 36 years ago and 30 years ago and never mention it, and all the sudden it happens", the president also said.

In the letter, Blasey identifies Mark Judge as the person she says assisted Kavanaugh the assault.

At the United Nations Monday, the president said accusations against Kavanaugh are politically driven and based on "highly unsubstantiated statements".

A second woman, Deborah Ramirez, accused Kavanaugh in an article published in the New Yorker magazine on Sunday of sexual misconduct during the 1983-84 academic year when both attended Yale University.

White House counselor Kellyanne Conway held a conference call with supporters during which she said there was a "vast left-wing conspiracy" to prevent Kavanaugh from winning confirmation, according to a participant who spoke on condition of anonymity to describe the private call.

A White House spokeswoman says the administration stands by the nominee, labelling the allegation "the latest in coordinated smear campaign by the Democrats created to tear a good man down".

Embattled Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh called the accusations that he sexually assaulted and harassed two individuals while in high school and college "smears" and an attempt to assassinate his character and derail his nomination.

The agreement and the latest accusation set the stage for a dramatic showdown as Kavanaugh and Ford each tell their side of the story. She also called for the committee to refer investigations into both sexual misconduct allegations to the FBI.

The New Yorker piece says Senate Democrats have been looking into the allegations.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell made clear that, no matter what happened at the hearing, the full Senate would vote on Kavanaugh's confirmation. The classmate said that he is "one-hundred-per-cent sure" that he was told that Kavanaugh was the student who exposed himself to Ramirez.

The magazine reported that after "six days of carefully assessing her memories and consulting with her attorney, Ramirez said that she felt confident enough of her recollections" to recall the incident. "They have also refused to invite other witnesses who are essential for a fair hearing that arrives at the truth about the sexual assault".

Ramirez said that she was invited to a dorm-room party in a suite at Lawrance Hall when a small group of students chose to play a drinking game together.

Farrow, who sparked the #MeToo movement with his reporting on Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein, and Mayer write that they could not confirm "with other eyewitnesses that Kavanaugh was present at the party". Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) writes that she expects Grassley to maintain confidentiality, was posted on the committee's website. "Neither she nor her legal representative have contacted the chairman's office", the statement reads.

Still, the White House and Republicans have cast doubt on Ford's allegations.

The Associated Press tried reaching Ramirez at her home in Boulder, Colorado. Everyone is invited to wear black (if possible, as this is happening soon), walk out, and-if you feel safe doing so-post a photo or video to social media, using the hashtag #BelieveSurvivors.
