Trump's Supreme Court nominee Kavanaugh rejects 'false accusations'

I've known him for 17 years", she said, adding: "I know his heart.

"The second accuser has nothing", Trump told reporters.

Often nodding in agreement as the judge spoke, Ashley Kavanaugh said she's known him for 17 years and described him as "decent. kind. and good" as she defended him. She said she clearly remembered that it was Kavanaugh, but she also acknowledged that she was extremely drunk and that she has significant gaps in her memory of the evening. "In the years following the therapy session, we spoke a number of times about how the assault affected her".

The president dismissed the notion that the allegation could be disqualifying, saying sarcastically: "Oh, gee, let's not make him a Supreme Court judge because of that".

Mr McConnell expressed his confidence despite several Republican senators apparently having reservations about whether they would vote to confirm Judge Kavanaugh.

The accusations from Ford and Ramirez roiled the Supreme Court nomination process at the 11th hour, energizing sexual assault victims and the broader #MeToo movement, threatening Kavanaugh's career and reputation and risking the court's standing as it prepares for Monday's start of the 2018 term. If approved by the panel, Kavanaugh would still face a vote in the full Senate.

On the Senate floor, Majority Leader Mitch McConnell called the allegations "a despicable smear" and "a new low". "Once the hearing is done, we plan to move forward in the very near future". A major slip-up could endanger Kavanaugh's confirmation and create political pain for the GOP in the midterm elections.

A week earlier California professor Christine Blasey Ford said Kavanaugh tried to tear her clothes off in an assault during a party around 1982 when both were students at elite private high schools in Washington.

Horry County Deputy Tom Fox told WPDE-TV the victims were mental health patients being transported from one facility to another. Holden wouldn't give further details on the victims' status, citing an ongoing state police investigation.

But there's nothing ordinary about the stakes and circumstances of Kavanaugh's nomination, with Republicans fighting to get him on the court by the end of September and cement a conservative-leaning court for years to come.

As Stewart notes, just a week ago Trump was careful to say that Ford deserved a hearing for her allegations.

Republican President Donald Trump, who has also been accused of sexual misconduct, escalated his rhetoric against both of Kavanaugh's accusers on Tuesday and called the allegations "a con game being played by the Democrats".

One of the biggest points of contention remained the outside counsel.

John Clune, attorney for Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh's second accuser, Deborah Ramirez, said Wednesday that his client would be willing to testify before the Senate Judiciary Committee, possibly even without a prior FBI investigation of her claims. Fifty-nine percent of those polled overall believe that if Ford's allegation is true, Kavanaugh should not be confirmed to the Supreme Court.

The protests came on the same day a letter Ford sent to Republican Chuck Grassley, the Senate Judiciary chairman, was made public.

The name of the female lawyer has been tightly held among Grassley, senior senators such as Sen.

A new NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist poll finds that nearly 6-in-10 Americans (58 percent) say they will be following the proceeding closely or very closely and a plurality haven't made up their minds on who's telling the truth - about a third (32 percent) believe Ford, about a quarter (26 percent) believe Kavanaugh and 42 percent are unsure who to believe.
