The White House has told the FBI it can expand its investigation into Brett Kavanaugh by interviewing anyone it wants - but must still wrap the probe up in a week, according to a new report.

The FBI has already conducted six background investigations of Kavanaugh, but it is also about to complete a supplemental probe of sexual assault allegations.

He revisited the "scope" question later Saturday on Twitter, writing in part, "I want them to interview whoever they deem appropriate, at their discretion".

The party's narrow 51-49 majority means that if all Democratic senators vote against the nominee, Republicans can only afford one defection. She says Kavanaugh's friend, Mark Judge, witnessed the attack and that two laughed at her.

"Okay, you want to get off trade", Trump said.

Kavanaugh and Ford appeared before the Senate Judiciary Committee last week, where they answered questions about the allegations.

But in subsequent comments to reporters, after he finished speaking to the largely receptive crowd, Flake defended the time limitations and scope of the FBI investigation that he forced as a condition of his Senate Judiciary Committee vote to approve Kavanaugh last week.

'This is not a man that said that he was ideal with respect to alcohol, ' said Trump, who found the testimony 'excellent'.

Barbara Van Gelder, Judge's lawyer, confirmed the interview had been completed but declined to say exactly when it ended or what Judge was asked.

"It does us no good to have an investigation that just gives us more cover", Mr Flake said.

Kavanaugh has vehemently denied all allegations against him. He and Kavanaugh were classmates at Georgetown Preparatory School, an elite private school outside Washington.P.J. After that, in middle of the committee vote, Flake got up to huddle with Delaware Democrat Sen.

U.S. Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh testifies before a Senate Judiciary Committee confirmation hearing on Capitol Hill in Washington, U.S., September 27, 2018.

The White House rebutted these claims with statements from two former Yale classmates of Judge Kavanaugh.

Swetnick, who is represented by prominent Trump critic Michael Avenatti, said in a declaration that Kavanaugh was physically abusive toward girls in high school and at a house party in 1982 where she says she was the victim of a gang rape.

The prosecutor said Ford has offered inconsistent accounts and has "struggled to recall important recent events relating to her allegations", which "raises further questions about her memory".

Senate Republicans discussed the contours of the investigation with the White House late Friday, according to a person familiar with the call who was not authorized to discuss it publicly.

The White House on Monday authorized the Federal Bureau of Investigation to interview any witnesses it deems necessary in its probe of the allegations, reversing course after previously placing restrictions that barred certain witnesses from being interviewed. Kavanaugh denies the allegation.

The FBI is expected to spend the coming days investigating the sexual misconduct claims against Kavanaugh. An FBI investigation has been approved to look into Kavanaugh this week ahead of a vote to send him to the Supreme Court. In his remarks, McConnell dismissed them, and sarcastically referred to the incident at the bar from 30-years ago as a "bombshell" and pledged to press forward with a vote.

Trump said he was surprised at how much Kavanaugh talked about his beer drinking while in school.

He said the process was "so bad for our country" and said the questioning of Kavanaugh by Democrats on Thursday was a "disgrace".

"This entire process has been an embarrassment to our democracy as Hoosiers watched firsthand how Senator Donnelly's liberal colleagues used uncorroborated allegations to create a media circus designed to smear and destroy Judge Kavanaugh's reputation", Braun said.
