Turkey will resist USA efforts to impose sanctions on Ankara over the trial of a Christian pastor who has been detained for two years, President Tayyip Erdogan said on Monday, accusing the preacher of having "dark links with terror".

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is speaking at the inauguration of a mosque under heavy security as he winds up a visit to Germany.

However, these relations have hit rock bottom after the failed coup of July 2016 in Turkey, Ankara accusing its european allies of a lack of solidarity after the putsch. He had breakfast with German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Berlin on Saturday.

Turkey's relations with Germany - and other key European Union states - had hit historic lows in the aftermath of the 2016 failed coup as Berlin took issue with the scope of the remorseless crackdown that also caught up German nationals.

"The two parties are willing to move forward to get out of the impasse", said Ilke Yoygur, an analyst at the Elcano Royal Institute in Madrid.

Erdogan, addressing the country's parliament, also hoped to improve ties with the United States as soon as possible and said Trump's administration would soon fix the "wrong approach" it had adopted towards Turkey.

Erdogan asked Germany during his visit to label Gulen's network a terrorist organization but Berlin said it needed more evidence.

This followed a state dinner the night before that was boycotted by several opposition politicians.

Relations between Berlin and Ankara have deteriorated due to the arrest of German citizens in Turkey.

Since in mid-2016, arms sales from Germany to Turkey have fallen dramatically.

Germany's arms exports to Turkey have collapsed since the new German government took office six months ago, the German Press Agency (DPA) reported on Sunday.

For Mr. Pierini, this episode "reflects the important differences between the two parties about the rule of law, in particular as regards free expression".
