WASHINGTON-Vice President Mike Pence will deliver a stinging rebuke to China in a speech scheduled for Thursday in which he will take aim at what he says are Beijing's attempts to influence US elections and global politics.

The US Navy said one of its ships nearly collided with a Chinese warship in the South China Sea, in an "unsafe and unprofessional manoeuvre".

The close call capped days of tit-for-tat military moves that came as President Donald Trump ramped up his trade war with China.

"The confrontation between the destroyer chinese and the USS Decatur was the most serious to date", says AFP Timothy Heath, of the Rand Corporation.

U.S. Vice President Mike Pence delivers a speech at the Republican National Lawyers Association (RNLA) in Washington, U.S., August 24, 2018. Britain, France and Japan have also conducted operations there in recent months, creating what many in China view as a coordinated campaign.

While Beijing did not acknowledge the exact distance its destroyer closed in on its counterpart, or the tactics used to chase it away, both the Foreign Ministry and the DoD slammed the United States for the violation and abuse of the "freedom of navigation" principle on the high seas.

The encounter followed a string of other military incidents.

The Chinese defence ministry said yesterday it opposes the U.S. warship's entry into the waters "around China's islands and reefs".

It confirmed a Chinese missile destroyer was immediately deployed to identify the American vessel and drive it away.

The US takes no official position on the competing claims by countries for territories located in the South China Sea.

If your cellphone gets an alert this afternoon, heres why
A group of New Yorkers is suing to be able to opt out of the alert, claiming it infringes on their First Amendment rights. It featured a loud alarm, followed by vibration that lasted around one minute, and required no action.

This was stated by the spokesperson for the Chinese Defence Ministry Senior Colonel Ren Guoqiang at a regular news briefing.

Pence will also argue that Chinese officials have tried to influence business leaders to condemn USA trade actions, "leveraging their desire to maintain their operations in China".

"Conducting risky, close proximity manoeuvres like this does go against the spirit of promoting safety in the interactions between operational forces at sea", Koh said.

"There's tension points in the relationship, but based on discussions coming out of NY last week and other things that we have coming up, we do not see it getting worse", Mattis told reporters en route to Paris.

"I just think it's part of reality", Mattis said Monday.

Since Trump took office past year, his administration has escalated pressure on China, most recently with several rounds of tit-for-tat economic trade tariffs on hundreds of billions in goods.

Relations between the USA and China have deteriorated, as escalating trade disputes and tariff hikes have been exacerbated by a newly announced US military equipment sale to Taiwan and some recent military operations.

"China's military is resolutely opposed to this", it said.

The US military is reportedly planning to put on a serious show of force in contested waters from the South China Sea to the Taiwan Strait as a warning to China and a reminder of the United States' ability to rapidly confront and counter any potential adversaries.
